I have never been big on scotch, as a matter of fact, I have tried two different kinda and have a bottle of each. Chivas Regal and Dewers... (when I smoke I like a nice Ale) what would be some easy to get ahold selections that are not an arm and a leg I should try??? I have a HUGE liquor store with about 70 varietals of scotch, so find stuff here is pretty easy.

Thanks

I'm not AVB (obviously), but I just started drinking some scotch and I love the Balvenie DoubleWood. I think it is around 42 bucks a bottle. Give it a shot.

Matty - for a decent single malt, I can sure recommend the Dalmore 12 YO or Dalmore's "Cigar Malt". Not cheap, but it won't cost you an arm or leg....just a couple of fingers.... :p

There are a number in the $50 area or less you can try. The best bet is to find a really good bar that has a variety to try but barring that you have to get a bottle. In no particular order:

Balveine DoubleWood
Tamdhu 10
Aberlour 15
Glendronach 12 Sherry Cask (you might get lucky and find the 15 in old stock)
Johnnie Walker Green

You don't have to drink scotch neat so try with a little water or over ice if you wish.

I have a similar but more complex question.

I have tried a few scotches and Whiskeys, but haven't found one that I can drink with a cigar and enjoy. By that I mean drink it slowly not like a shot.

So far the only hard liquor that I enjoy drinking slowly are Cognacs: Primarily Hennesy Xo and Paradise, Hines Antique and Remy Martin Xo, Extra and obviously Loius

Even the VSOP cognacs are lacking in complexity for slow drinking

Straight shots I like VSOP stuff ( us russians are crazy, we drink a bottle of that stuff as shots )

Whiskey I like Basil Heyden . Woodford Reserve not so much. Have a bottle of Maccalans 12yr old aged in cherry wood and that just does not sit right with me too sweet I think.

So if there is any hope for me what scotches do you reccomend and how should I try them ( on the rocks, with asplash of water, etc? )

Really a multi-part question. I can't tell you how to drink scotch as there is no wrong or right way to do it. Some like ice or water and others, such as myself, prefer neat. Try it different ways and see what you like. Obviously, some really high proof drams are hard to drink neat so even I might cut them a bit with water or ice.

I would have to say that you would probably need a high proof scotch cut over ice to fulfill what you want. To that end there are only a few that are easily found. Here are some of them in no particular order.

Macallan Cask Strength
Balvenie Single Barrel 15 yo (try to find a version over 100 proof if possible)
Aberlour a'bunadh
Bowmore 1989-16yr Old Cask Strength

If you like the Islay style :
Ardbeg Uigeadail
Laphroaig Cask Strength

Of these I'd give the nod to the Aberlour a'bunadh to start with but that is me. YMMV.

When I first started in on single malts, I tried the following and loved each.

Scapa 12 yr,
Highland Park, very interesting
Talkisker, very flavorful too. Good Price.

The Glendronach is awesome as well, damn I need another bottle of that, thanks for the reminder!

:0 Blasphemy :p
j/k

I love this...OMG blasphemy. If there is no right or wrong way then. Check out what I have done with some of my Scotch. I took Glenlivet 21yo Archive and have put it in with soda, tea, and coffee. Ok...I've done that with all my Scotches at some point. I dont use water so I just make Mr Peat's Hot Totties when not feeling so good. Very seldom use soda but I have been known to with the high octane Scotches. :D

As you said, there is no right or wrong way. :D :D :D :D

I’m wise for my years...
...Maybe I’m just lazy...I just sit outside with a bottle and a glass only getting up to get another bottle, get another cigar or deposit the scotch...
I can probably just ditch the glass, bring out my humidor and get one of those bladders...why half ass it :p

Food for thought :whistling:
