So at the last minute my unusually shy 5 year old decided he wanted to join youth basketball. Well of course he was 53rd on the waiting list and there was a coach shortage, so long story short I now have a whistle and a new pair on non-marking sole Nikes. Tonight was our first practice and for some reason I was a bit nervous. Maybe it was the fact that I had just inherited a herd of 5-7 year olds, or maybe I was worried that one of the parents would be that guy who treats youth sports like he has a dime riding on every game. Either way, the practice was a success. The kids were all great although a few seemed like they had just finished a case of red bull. SO Saturday we tie em up for the first game which should be an amazing spectacle of chaos, screaming parents and juice boxes. I am pumped!

Sounds great man. I look forward to doing such things with my kids in the not so distant future.

Good luck to ya, and I hope you're able to promote that "winning isn't everything, but having fun is" attitude.

Welcome to the brotherhood of youth coaching. You'll love and hate it at the same time! It gets better every year as you learn from your mistakes. Remember the golden rule, if they don't come to practice, they don't get the playing time... reguardless of how good they are or how fine thier mother is. :whistling:

Good job stepping up!

<congrat's on the coaching job - enjoy!!!>

Coaching is an awesome experience, if it weren't for the parents.

Nicely done.

That's awesome, man! It's great to see a father invovled, and how much fun is it going to be to be able to share that with your son?
Keep us posted!

welcome aboard!

I coach youth basketball for 6 years now. Starting with 1-5 grade kids in instructional leagues and school teams 5-8 grade.

I have had 5 teams in one season a few years ago. This is is a light season for me. 8th grade girls team going right now at school until nov. Then 8th grade boys starts. Then i have a 3-4 grade girls team running the same time on an overlap in january to feb.

Its fun and rewarding on so many levels. Be grateful you got the younger ones. Wait until you move in to the politics of grade school basketball and playtime issues and parents backstabbing. Thats when it get challenging.

let me know if there is anything i can do to help you. I can recommend a few great starting books to drills and coaching if you need them. Always good refernece to when you feeling like your practices are getting stale and need something new to get their attention.

Awesome job for stepping up  , thank you.

I started with coaching basketball, then soccer, then 8 years of Scouting. What a great experience all of my volunteer hours were, and to be able to help our youth in some way is very rewarding. I remember one instance when a parent arrived late to our soccer game and pulled me aside to tell me that she could hear "me" yelling, only me, all the way across the parking lot. When I tried to apologize she stopped me in my tracks and told me that what she heard were words of encouragement, good job!, way to go!, AWESOME!. She then thanked me for what I was doing for the kids.

Congrats DDog! I'm sure it will be a great experience for you and your son, as well as the other kids. :)

There is nothing like it. I coach two soccer teams right now. Kindergarten GIRLS and 4th grade boys. I really only wanted to caoch to girls, but kinda like you, when the parents line was formed the rest of line took one step backwards and left me in front. The little girls are a hoot. They are so cute and girlie, very polite and let the other team play with the ball too. At least the boys have a basic understanding of being agressive and going for the ball. I've been doing this for for 9 years and had fun each and every year.

you have nothing to worry about with the kids. The parents are the ones you better watch for. Good luck and remember to have fun!!!!

Thanks for the kind words guys. Fun is the goal. They will have plenty of time to grow up and learn to dribble between their legs later. I will keep you all posted as the season progresses. And yes Cohiba, I will stick to that rule as much as possible although there is this one mom that.. well nevermind.

Ok so the first game was a great time. All the kids played well and it turns out we have a couple of ballers. One little guy (6 year old) got a rebound and went coast to coast for a layup!

As a proud father I am happy to post the video of my little guys first basket. VIDEO HERE

I don't have kids yet, so I can't comment on how it is to be a coach. I can comment on other coach's that I have had, throughout my 23 years of playing sports.

I really apprieatted all of them, I learned so much and I wish that I could find each and everyone of them and thhank them for making me who I am today. I remember my dad had to coach my basketball team when I was about 5, that was a great experience and I treasured him for it.

Thanks Denverdog and all the coach's that our my BOTL :)

Good luck man. I had lots of fun playing baseball as a kid. I've got a few funny stories from those days. Have fun with it.
