Quote from a brother here that popped up in a conversation we had about me sending cigars...

Post office here won't deliver anymore if it says cigars, my guy at ****** cigar had to change his packing in the middle of this year. So I would put something else on the package. Hope you see this before you shipped.

??? Is that a new policy or is some anti-smoking asshat making his own rules at that post office?

I just sent 5 boxes out to the US of A with "cigars" written on the customs form (no I didn't see it before I shipped, and I don't like lying on customs forms to begin with). I do not want anything to happen to them.

Your feedback is welcome.

I've not heard of this. I just sent a couple of boxes to Iraq that said cigars on the forms. The postmaster even asked me if they were "special" cigars and if I wanted to insure them.

I also just got a pack from Famous last Saturday that came USPS. You would think they would send it another way if it was against the rules.

I sure hope this isn't true!

??? ???

I'm thinking that the post office in question has a anti-smoker in charge making his own rules.

I know I'd go over the local postmaster's head if he tried to pull some crap like that on me.

Are there any problems sending cigars to Europe?
or should we just send "candles"... :whistling:

While I don't know the reason behind the change last year, I'm not allowed to order tobacco and have it delivered via anyone other than USPS. Indiana and a few other states are included in this recent change.

lol candles work as does cigars, only candles get delivered faster for some reason :p

But lets not confuse the issue here Carl :)

I'm asking if anyone else has heard about US Post Offices not delivering packages if "cigars" are written on the declarations form.

You know what Wurm, I think I have similar problem as You. I can't purchase cigars from US because I'm not this "some kind of tabacco tax payer" and I only can receive them as a gift but no more then 10. And thats why if I want someone to send me more that 10 stick it cant be written 'cigars' because I'll have to go for it with cash to customs office. But also sending package with other description is a risk, they always can x-ray it.

So, not letting send package from US to Europe with 'cigars' description looks like was customs officer good will. ;)

Hope I wrote what You were asking for.

Kinda sorta Michal,

But this is after the packages get through customs (has nothing to do with customs, thats a whole other can of worms) and is delivered to the post office.

What my friend meant is that he was told by his post office that they would refuse to deliver packages with "cigars" written on the box. And that sounds very un-kosher to me.

Well any cigars I've ordered always say "Cigars" on the customs form and there are no issues.

That being said, a while back, our Army Post Office stopped allowing the shipping of any Tobacco Products whatsoever even if they were non cubans. At first it was just no shipping Cubans, however, after many Soldiers were caught trying to send "unbanded" cigars through the mail, they shut it off completely.

But also, an Army Post Office is way different than a normal one.

Hm... so if its post office rule (after customs office) than its really strange. ???

I feel your pain Wurm. I just did a search on the word cigars @ the USPS website and could not find any regulation regarding the movement of cigars in or out of the USA. I wiii keep looking around.

I found this on the legal search button at the USPS:

International Mail - Mailing to Brazil
Effective May 3, 2001, the individual country listing for Brazil in the International Mail Manual (IMM) is revised to reflect a prohibition against mailing commercial shipments of all tobacco and smoking-related products to Brazil.

We will incorporate these changes into both the printed version of IMM Issue 25 and the online IMM, which can be accessed via Postal Explorer at http://pe.usps.gov.

International Mail Manual (IMM)

Country Conditions for Mailing - Brazil

Prohibitions (130)

[Add the following entries to the list of prohibitions:]

· Commercial shipments that contain cigarettes, cigarillos, cigars, loose and packaged tobacco, pipes, and other smoking devices.

· Commercial samples that promote tobacco products or smoking-related merchandise.

Looks like this has been around for awhile. I don't know why but it looks like it is restricted to Brazilian mail only. Maybe someone remembered this document at a certain P.O. and thought it was across the board. Good luck I hope your stuff gets where it is going.

I found a few more documents issued by the USPS that have legaleez about mailing tobacco products. I would say that there is enough there to stop your packages if they wanted. take a look here:

Well this explains why I'm still waiting on a few packages from the US..

Gifts sent to Germany:

Articles consigned as "Unsolicited gifts" are acceptable and will be allowed entry free of any duty or VAT providing the shipment is valued at less than 45 EURO originated from and consigned to an individual, and are individually wrapped. Multiple gifts can be consigned in one shipment so long as the individual parcels enclosed are individually tagged with the recipients name, are individually wrapped and the value does not exceed the per person limit of 45 EURO. Shipments consigned to companies as gifts for an individual may be denied entry as gifts and will be subject to full duty and VAT. Generally, most articles can be consigned as gifts, except those articles noted prohibited or restricted for import (see General Import Prohibitions and Restrictions).

Exceptions are limited to only one of the following articles per gift:

Cigarettes (50 cigarettes total) Perfume (50 grams net weight)
Toilet Water (.25 liter) Liquor Spirits (1 liter), Wine (2 liters)
Cigars (10 cigars total, not of Cuban origin) Coffee 500 gm, Concentrated 200gm
The gift shipment should be tendered with the following documents and statements:

* Air Waybill or Bill of Lading
* Proforma Invoice
* The description provided on both the air waybill or ill of lading and commercial invoice should specify the description of the actual goods enclosed and is followed with the following statement or similar: "Unsolicited gifts not for resale or other purpose". Descriptions such as "Gift" or "Unsolicited Gifts" should be avoided.

But doesn't answer my original question at all.

Na thats only for Military and Government Post Office Boxes, and not Private mail :)

Actually if you read down the list it says 'Domestic Mail' as well. Thats why I said there was some interpertation req'd. Does anyone here work for the P.O.?

Well this explains why I'm still waiting on a few packages from the US..
And if You expect more then 10 cigars per "still waiting package", I think You should call your customs office, and prepare some money.
