Old Grand Dad

My father-in-law gave me this bottle of unopened Old Grand...I know there are many a connoisseur (AVB) of older whiskies...any input on this? Should I open it and drink it? If I do, will I go blind? Thanks!

To add to my post. If you keep it for another 20+ years it probably will be worth something. You might get a good dinner out of it.

Nothing wrong with OGD. A very good Rye, it is full of fiery spice. At 114 proof it may best with an Ice cube or if you must a bit of Ginger Ale. Not sure how old the bottle is but it looks like a nip or two had been taken from the bottle (maybe angel's share)....Once bourbon is bottled it no longer ages, it should not be any worse or better than the day it was bottled.

So, why is the contents of the bottle decreased? Is if from alcohol evaporation? If so, does that make the whiskey less potent?

Alcohol will evaporate faster then water so you have lost some but water went too. Most likely no longer 114 proof but still above 100 IMO. Tip it on the side for a month or so to swell the cork again to slow the loss down. Any tax info on the tax stamp? Sometimes they are dated.

I would not lay it on its side. The cork might fail. If you have done so, check to make sure it is not leaking. Then stand it upright. What's been lost is lost and if you drink now or a year from now there will not be much evaporation. However, if you are going to hold on to it and not drink it, I would recommend that you seal it with wax or plastic wrap.

Also, the actual reason that alcohol evaporates quicker than water has to do with vapor pressure.

All liquids have a certain amount of vapor at the surface of the liquid. Since the intermolecular forces are weaker within a smaple of alcohol than within a smaple of water, there is more vapor present above the surface of alcohol than above the surface of water. The more vapor above the surface, the higher the vapor pressure. The higher the vapor pressure, the faster the rate of evaporation.

Since there is more vapor present above the surface of the alcohol, more molecules will randomly leave the surface and go into the air surrounding the container. This is the process of evaporation, which is different than boiling. The two are related, but not the same.

This difference in rates of evaporation has nothing to do with the heat capacities of water and alcohol.
