Does anyone know how to "turn off" whatever it is in firefox that causes a little red bar on the bottom to come up, it looks like a search or "find" function of some type, and it comes up whenever I type the apostrophe. I do not know why it happens but I cannot make it stop! And of course I have to really sit here and think while I type so that I am avoiding all possesive and plural words that require said apostrophe!

Just clear it and it will go away until you go to the top menu bar "Edit" "find in this page" again.

I think this is a glitch because it happens to me too...I just have to restart firefox to get it to stop.

Do you have any toolbar's installed? I've been using FF for about 3 years now (or whenever it first came out) and have never experienced this problem. Sounds like it could be a toolbar interacting w/ FF.

This is something different...like if you want to type a message, it will open the search bar at the bottom if you use the apostrophe key. It's annoying.

What, if any extensions are you running? I've had several issues over time. I usally have the green/red arrow come on the upper right of the screen when an update comes along. Are you updated.

I don't think I'm running any plug ins or extensions. And by the looks of that previous sentance it does not always happen! Like Martin said it happens when I am trying to type in a response/reply. In between when I posted this and my reply I have not done anything out of the ordinary, I haven't closed then re-opened the browser or anything.

Would McAfee Site Advisor be considered a plug-in? I have that running.

Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> General Tab -> Uncheck "Search for text when I start typing".

That'll turn it off completely. I've had to do this because the same thing was happening, but only on certain websites. I'm on Firefox now, have "searching as I'm typing" enabled and have never seen the issue you're talking about on this site.

You can go to Tools -> Add-ons to see what extension you have installed. I'd second the recommendation to make sure you're upgraded to the latest version, also.

Way to go John!

This has been bugging me also. This is designed to shortkey into find when you're NOT in entry mode on a page. The bug happens when you ARE in entry mode and hit an apostrophe ' FF pops into find mode. You weren't hallucinating, Andy!

I'll have to double check, but I thought Firefox automatically updated itself to the new version.

Not a bug, it's a feature.

The Apostrophe, along with CTRL-F Is a shortcut for the FIND feature in FF.
Turn it off simply hit CTRL-F to keep it from starting up when you start typing go to

TOOLS -> Options -> Advanced -> General
Uncheck "Search for text when I stat typing"

Restart FF and you should be all set.

Note to self: Read entire thread before replying

Okay, it looks like that prob is solved. Here's mine: Sometimes when I hit backspace, especially when in chat, it goes back to the previous page. Is there a solution for that in firefox?
