San Diego does have a MFM Fellowship program, and coincidentally we'll be there first week in May, perhaps it's worth a visit! Hmmmm...


But can we afford a house anywhere around SD? That is, one with all the walls, doors and windows intact?

It's all relative Andy. Salary should be higher in SoCal (talking without experience), so houses are more expensive.
I guess that's the price you pay for better weather.

Colorado is no winner, unless you move out in winter.

I say, if you are going to move, go for year round weather or...
as Sam says, move to Arizona, most definitely cheaper than CA, just a lot hotter in summer.

When we lived in Denver (Castle Rock) I rode my motorcycle year round, x-mas day, New Years day etc. The whole "300 days of sunshine per year" quote about Denver is accurate, and Denver Metro's weather is actually quite mild. Not unusual at all to have 50 degree days in January, which makes the cold days alright in my book.

Tucson would be a top choice for me as well. I spent some time there in the mid 90's and really enjoyed it. Mostly I was out backpacking and climbing, but on our "in town" days I enjoyed Tucson and would certainly be open to checking it out in depth. I know I'd get more days on the motorcycle, that is, if I can strap that infant car seat on the back...

And we'll certainly be looking at SD closer while we're out there.

Just an update, we've decided to at least start looking for a new job for my wife. One of the things that would have made her job here more bearable was a third doctor that they had interviewed and put an offer out to. However administration once again screwed up and lowballed this lady, so it's looking more and more like she's not coming. It's actually quite funny, the admin/higher ups tried to save themselves a measly $25,000 a year in this new doc's salary offer, and now they're going to lose her, and both of their current doc's because both my wife and her partner are fed up with the BS! So instead of a third doc who would have made them a boatload of more money, they're going to lose their entire department, and unless they get a couple new docs fast they've wasted the money on all the equipment they had to buy/lease to start up the department 2 years ago!


So I think we're heading to Montrose, CO next weekend to interview, as long as my wife can clear her schedule. It's not the front range, but it sure beats the hell out of where we're at now!

Andy, it ain't the Front Range, but its a tight community, and some of the most beautiful real estate that the USA has to offer. I hope you don't have problems with narrow roads on the sides of mountains.

Actually my wife did the first year of her residency in Vegas, but there's no Maternal Fetal Medicine fellowship there so it's out. It was one of the first places I checked to see if there was a program because I wouldn't mind at all moving back.

NYC baby all the way!!!!! As an added bonus Columbia and Cornell both have exception Maternal Fetal Medicine Programs!
