In Brooklyn judges run in election, but once they get a major party endorsement they are a shoe in. There has been a lot of talk about changing that but it has not. What this means practically is, if you get to know party hacks and 'endow' them well enough you have a good shot at being a judge. What that may mean is you may be owning some people some serious concessions. Of course, the majority of judges do their jobs admirably, but this one did not. Notice what he has taken. 31 yrs would be pretty steep. One of our local judges just got 26 mos for trading child porn. I'd rather hang out with the judge that likes cigars.
