Anyone fly R/C planes?

Used to build and fly them as a kid. We built ours from balsa wood and heat shrink plastic, popped in servos, fuel tank, engine and let 'em rip. It sucked to put all that time in, take it to the field and screw up and watch it nose dive into the ground.....eventually I got better.

I've been a flyer for most of my life, was one of my Dad's hobbies that he passed down to me.

I only fly gas powered though.

That plane you linked looks like a good starting plane and like Dan said, not building it yourself makes it a hell of a lot easier on your nerves to risk crashing it when your learning how to fly.

I am an avid RC flyer... I have like a dozen different planes in my garage... the plane you have linked to is pretty decent but you would be better off learning with a delta wing type plane like the Stryker or the high wing SuperCub from hobbyzone... I Promise you, they are both VERY stable at slow speeds but when you get comfortable with them, you can throttle up and get those babies rippin... PM for more Q's. I would love to help! :)

are you on r/c forum (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=618732) ? i have posted there under my same tag as here (rob_k)

Really funny you post this! I was seriously going to post a RC Helicopter thread today!!! I see we even have a thread going for RC cars.

I never got into planes, however I am now getting into rc helicopters. I'm the high bidder on one now on ebay. :D Going to start out with electric and then maybe work my way into nitro.

Used to be into RC nitro cars when I was younger, but got tired of it.

which heli are you bidding on?

indeed... what are you going for... Heli's are very tricky to learn to fly. It is always better to go with a higher end one because they are set up better. let me know if I can help at all! :) That goes for anyone... I am a fanatic in all aspects of RC... Planes Helis Cars and even boats! nitro and electric...

Helis are awesome but also the quickest way to throw a few thousand dollars into the crapper if something goes wrong.

Glad to see a few other RC/Nuts here, and someone who can help Rob out with the electrics, I have 0 experience with them. That cub you posted looks like a good starter plane, high-wings are always more forgiving of pilot error "Let go of the sticks and it will level out".

If Rod is looking at a small, indoor heli to play with, they are fairly cheap, actually. The Easy Star I referred to is a real beginner plane, as the prop and motor is up high and no chance of damage. It is also a EPP foam, and easily repairable, right now, saving up for it. The Cub, looks like something to move up too, I would hate to make it a learn and burn plane. I am grabbing a micro foamie that has a small controller (digital) and is really nice...a plane to crash and learn, and get the feel of R/C. I have flown m/s fightsim for years, so I should grasp this with some practice.
Will keep you guys posted when i finally get airborne, and thanks for the input.

Coaxial rotors are very easy to learn with but really lack in maneuvarability... they are fun at first but they will leave you wanting more... go with something thats CCPM and just take the time to learn to fly properly and you will never buy another one... google RADDS School of Rotary Flight... It helped me immensly when i first got into helis.

The honey bee F.P. is a good little flyer... Just understand that you aren't gonna be able to just pick it up and fly it. It is definitely gonna take some patience and discipline to get the hang of it... I would highly suggest the first time you attempt to fly it, don't actually fly it... LOL... seriously though just give it enough throttle to get "light on the skids" and not actually airborne, then you can see how it responds to your stick movements... kinda skid across the ground for a while until you get the feel for her... Beware, these things are REALLY touchy. Just go out and have some fun...I'm sure you will have a blast!

I'm thinking about getting a RC sailplane. Large field in the park and a large elastic band.

Been looking into R/C planes (electric, not glow), anyone here indulge in this hobby? Been looking at the Easy Star as a second plane (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti00...LXFXV0&P=FR) and have a small micro flyer on order to crash and learn on.

I can get to be an expensive hobby. My father an I got into RC planes and helicopters... decent ones, especially helicopters are pretty damn expensive.... and costly to fix. I took out the blades on my helicopter by accidentally running it into a set of bleachers.... one of RC planes crashed becuase the hobby shop guy sold an underpowered motor. After a while, I just realized RC cars and boats are the way to go. Much cheaper to fix.... and less prone to bad crashes, especially boats. And with the gas ones and transmissions, you get get these things up to 60+ mph. Either way, if you can afford it and learn correctly then planes would be cool.
