I hate to tell you I told you so. But...I'm a third generation landlord. Take some professional advice. Hire a plumber. In the long run, they're worth every penny.
Doc.
I don't follow directions very good. I figure'd I could at least get one of these faucets in today. :whistling:
I have been stuck under the sink for the last half hour not knowing how to get out without ripping the center dividing plank. I suppose its like a crab trap where its easy to get in but almost impossible to get out. Eventually my left arm was completely asleep so it was useless. Manuvering around while inside I rolled over my good glasses and ruin a $300 pair of frames. I finally made it out with one of those contortunist type moves (apparently) and have a nice big getting redder by the minute scrap across my back. I was only able to get one hose disconnected and have oil and rust in my eye's, hair, and mouth. Also dropped the basin wrench across my head. I'm sure the welt will eventually go down. I'm typing this one handed as I still don't have any feeling in my left arm. I've never cussed as much before and if you've never screamed cuss words at the top of your lungs while stuck in a 12" x 15" opening (yes, I measured it) take my word for it, its loud.
I don't care what the plumber charges me when he gets here.... I'm paying him double.
wishfull thinking bro...my cousin is a plumber, and , ah, looks nothing like that.
Thats all you need is a basin wrench and speedys those are braided pipes and you connect top of faucet first then drop in sink so all u have to worry is the 2 nuts to hold the faucet in placeDo you have a basin wrench? That's likely the tool you will need for that job. Go to the local hardware and get the least expensive one they have unless you plan on doing this type of thing often. They aren't good for much else...C'mon Kenny, how many other faucets do you have in your house? Ya mean you couldn't have gone to another faucet in the house, looked underneath and seen that the hot is hooked up to the long one?
I suppose I could have but I needed the cigar break. These jobs are delicate. Seemed like a good time to sit my azz at the puter and fire up a shitty cigar while everyone else helped..... you know, in a Tom Sawyer kinda way.
I just took a peek at the bathroom faucets. :0 There's no way I can get under the sink and get to the faucets... they're tucked up behind the sink to where I can't get my hands in. I think my wife new what she was doing. An hour of frustration working on this and I'll tear the damn sink out which will leave me having to call a contractor to come remodel. Yep, I'm sure she had it figured out from the beginning.
The real question..... what cigar do I pair up with plumbing work?
I was going to write the whole story about today but decided to give you the readers digest version. I need a drink!
1) First plumber shows up and quotes me close to $600 to replace them. :0 I said no thank you and had to pay a 89.99 sevice charge for them coming out.
2) Called plumber #2 and got an estimate over the phone of approx $200. Sounds good... come on down.
3) Gets started and informs me that angle stops and hoses will need to be replaced. Has to go get parts. Not included in original quote.
4) Gets first sink done and begins on second sink. Handle on the new faucet is broken. I have to go back to the store for replacement.
5) Can't find receipt. I figured it being an even exchange no problem.... wrong. They could look it up if I could give them the credit card used for the purchase. Went through all of my cards and nouthing. CS rep was looking at me like I was trying to pull a fast one on her. I call my wife and she said we'd be looking until the cows come home since she paid for it on her card. Great.... input her card and problem solved. Get the new faucet and head back home. About 45 minute trip and I have no idea what the plumber was doing during this time.
6) Plumber calls me into second bathroom and shows me that the plastic tail piece included with the faucet for the pop-up stopper is too big and won't fit in the existing hole. Options are to drill out the sink or go get a metal one that will be smaller. I tell him to go get a metal one. Not included in original quote.
7) Finally finishes and while he's writing up my invoice outside in his truck I go check out his work. One of the hoses underneath is leaking. After another 30 minutes to fix the leak he once again announces he's done and goes back out to his truck.... no doubt to add the extra 30 minutes to the invoice.
8) Total of second plumbers bill - $483.39
To sum it all up these two bathroom faucets cost me a bit over $700. This doesn't include the pain and suffering I've endured the last two days. (not to mention the shame of not being able to complete the project) I may look back on this one day and laugh but it won't be anytime soon. I'd rather stick toothpicks under my fingernails than go through this again.
Ron Z and SLR here I come.....
