I'm trying to step back a bit from being such a Opus and Anejo skank, but dayum, DPG is churning out so many lines i'm confused (that's happens alot with me). I also keep hearing great things about LG/LFD, and have 0 experience with that line. I've smoked a few Pepins, most were good, nothing has WOW'd me yet, but still plenty i haven't tried yet, and only smoking 2 sticks a week, don't want to (if possible) spend all my time experimenting. I know this is a long shot as taste is very subjective, but given that i love the Opus, Anejos, GOF, DC Max, etc., can anyone maybe nudge me in the right direction?

thanks
Frank

Don Pepin Garcia Black (Cuban Classic in Robusto, Toro and Belicoso) has "Wowed" me as of recently. This cigar can be had for a very reasonable price.

But as already stated.... taste is very subjective.

Just bypass all of that and head to McDonalds to hangout with Ronald!! *nightmares*

I enjoy the LFD DL chisel, not really strong but good flavor and the chisel is nice for when I can't find my cutter. The DPG JJ is good, but possibly too light for your palate?

LFD Cabinet Cameroon are great smokes - a little spice and a real depth of flavor. The DL chisel tips are good strong smokes, too. Give Al a call and have him whip you up a sampler - make sure he includes a DL Lancero Cameroon if he has any left!

As for the DPG... I'm still sampling around to find one that's worth buying in bulk... good luck.

I think Dave hit it :)

Frank, I am a VSG whore and I do like the Opus and Anejo, but I do have a couple of suggestions, try the LFD Factory press II (got some in a group buy, thanks Lee) and if you can get them (as JHolmes said) get some LFD Lanceros from Al, they are both wonderful and I am having trouble keeping my hands out of them.

Edited because I can't type

Pepin?? No Pete Johnson
I know it's Pete Johnson's brand, but they are made under the supervision of Pepin. Tatuaje was the first brand of cigars that Pepin made on his own.

From the Tatuaje website.
"All Tobacco is 1st Generation Cuban Seed Grown in Nicaragua.
Cigars are rolled in classic Cuban tradition by Master Rollers in Little Havana Miami, FL U.S.A.
Headed by Maestro Tobaquero Jose Garcia."

The Brown label is your safest bet, no one complains about the Browns. After that, I like the Series JJ Belicoso, the Havana Hermosos or Angeles, and the 601 Habano (red).

I'm not a fan of the Cuban Classics (black label). To me they seem all bite, very little flavor. Kinda like an Antano, you know. It whoops your ass and doesn't tell you why. Only the Black really won't whoop your ass.

I'm bantering at this point. Always bet on Brown.

In my humble opinion, the best cigars that you can smoke that have Pepin's fingerprints on them are Tatuaje Brown Label Havana Cazadores, Tatuaje Havana VI Angeles, Don Pepin Serie JJ Salamones, Series JJ Maduro or my favorite go to smoke at the moment the 601 Red Label Toro. If you have any trouble finding these, send me a PM and we'll set up a trade.

Interesting... The Black label's have become my favorite as of lately. To each is own....

BTW - Good call on the 601 Red. Smoked my first yesterday and found it much better than the Blues. Got a Green (La Punta) in the box waiting to be had.... Can't wait.

Smokin a San Cristobal toro as I write this. Good cigar. Not my favorite Pepin creation, but definately worth trying if you haven't yet.

edited to add... JFR naturals and maduros are also a wonderful Pepin treat!

Exactly. I really tried with the blacks, they just never struck me as anything special. I wouldn't even say the Reds are anything that special, but I think they are a good smoke. The Havanas have this honey flavor I pick up in the spice, the Browns have a creamy complexity, the JJs are more refined.

I'm far from an expert, I don't even know what the green label is, nor have I ever heard of the JFRs. I have had the San Cristobal, recently actually, and I'm going to really go out on a limb here, but I thought that was a poor blend of tobacco. Down the road I'll try another though, because I made a mistake with that cigar and I smoked it right out of the B&M. It was obviously too wet.

JFR - Just For Retailors

My understanding is that the JFR is the blend that Pepin was using in these retailor type events. Then I heard he was "training" rollers on them. Both statements are hearsay to me. Its got an unfinished foot and a pigtail cap. Comes in several diffent vitolas and two different shades, natural and maduro. I enjoy the hell out of them and can be had for around $4 a stick! But only at B&M retailor shops.

Good call on the Tats... I love the Havana VI Angeles...

Good list, Dave. However, of those listed, the ones I would reach for first:

Padilla 1932
Tatuaje Cojonu 2003
Tatuage Regios
Tatuaje J21
Hirsch y Garcia

I also found the San Cristobal to be slightly to wet and experienced some slight burn problems right after purchasing it. After letting them rest in the humi though, I have found them to be a good cigar. Have not had much experience with any of the other pepin creations, but I do like the san cristobal. Still more of a fan of opus and vsg's though. We'll see what this cigar does with some age on it.

I think I have smoked everything in every size that Pepin has either rolled or supervised.

I build my list as follows:
  • Padilla 1932
  • Tatajue J21
  • Tatajue Reserva SW
  • 601 Red
Pretty subjective list, especially considering te two Tats are from the same budle. I have found the Pepin Cuba Classis and JJ Series bold but just not very tasty.
They just seem to ignore my palate for taste. However, I have friends who smoke them like they are vanishing from the planet.

If you're going to try the 601 red label, you might want to try the blue label maduro as well (it's the only 601 that does anything for me).
