I get junk mail from Howard Dean because I'm a liberal. Usually I delete it because it's never about the issues I really care about, except today, and I disagree with him 185%... I think it's the first time I'm not on the Democrats side. I mainly posted this for CC. Maybe I won't vote for Hillary. :sign:

Dear John,

This morning, President Bush rejected health care for children. Now it's time for Democrats to reject President Bush.

If we can get 2/3 of Congress to stand up to President Bush, we can overturn his veto on the State Children's Health Insurance Program -- a program that provides health insurance for millions of kids.

We need your help to get those votes.

We've set up a simple tool that will allow you to write a letter and send it to your members of Congress instantly. Send your Senators and Representative a message telling them to stand up to George Bush:

http://www.democrats.org/FightForKids

The figures on the link provided make me a little nervous. ???

As it stands they have enough votes to override the veto... :-/

Use that link bro AND TELL THEM NO!

I emplore you to vote to uphold the veto of this bill. This bill needs to be purged of the luxury tax on cigars. It needs to be streamlined so that it truely helps those in need, and not those looking for a free ride on the government.

The primary funding for this bill is through cigarette taxes. Taxes on cigarettes are both regressive and deminishing. If it was truely the intention of the tax base for this bill to also help in the overall health of the children covered by the bill, then the taxes would be levied on items like soda pop, candy bars and video games, which directly affect the health of children in america today.

This bill is bad legislation for a good cause. Uphold the veto and fix the legislation.

This is a classic, as-clear-as-day difference between Democrats and Republicans.

Notice how now that the Democrats have majorities in the House and Senate, shit legislation like this gets proposed? They sit there all holier than thou with their "for the children" crap when in reality, this legislation does essentially nothing except find a way to raise taxes and the most liberal of the shitbag, do-gooder Democrats actually ENJOY punishing smokers though they'll never publicly admit it.

So there you have it America, keep right on voting Democrat but don't piss and moan when they keep pulling crap like this......

Better yet, put a Democrat in the White House and MAKE SURE that tobacco taxes increase even more!! Sounds "fair" to me....... :whistling:

And now we return you to your "Fair and Balanced" "Programming". Too simplistic.

The Democrats and republicans are both smoking their Cubans and laughing - right in their offices. The media portrays this drama about "us vs them" to keep us believing it's not the whole goddamn system rigged against us. The only candidate hinting at this is Ron Paul. He wins many straw polls, debates. CNN polls, and MSNBC polls but you never hear about him in the mass media except in a derogatory light. HE SCARES THE HELL OUT OF THE POWER-BROKERS. He is against anything that infringes upon our hard-won freedom protected in the Bill of Rights. That's why he's so popular. Most people still recognize when they are being lied to and when they hear the simple truth. And going back to rule of law scares the hell out of the thieves running this made-for-TV-movie called "network news". He reminds everyone that we do have the power to throw the bums out. The bums don't like to hear that. Poor bums!! :D

Ron Paul, LMFAO! He's pulling what, 2% in most polls? I'd hardly call that "so popular." You say he "wins many straw polls" which not only highly suspect but I'd go so far as to say it's downright false. Can you back your statement up with any evidence because I've never heard that.

Maybe I missed something so if you could provide me a link (to something other than his website) to prove that statement, I'd sure appreciate it. ;)

CC,

I never said he would be elected. Only that his views on the issues, as reflected in the polls on the debate results, are widely popular. And that he is popular as a result. Sadly, that doesn't mean people will vote for him.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=vjH9PoDpATI
Here's a great video of Paul in 1987 saying all the same things he says today. That our gov't is causing all the problems they are trying to "fix", that the role of gov't has been drastically changed from it's original intention, and that liberty is the first casualty of rampant gov't influence.

Of course, I'm not naive enough to believe he'll be allowed to win if he's allowed to run. Or that he'd last a week if he was elected. I just don't see any other person in politics speaking the truth about the issues and that was why he did so well in the MSNBC and CNN debate polls and he's popular for doing so.

The overall "Who would you vote for today" polls reflect the fact that the average voter is no more naive than we are about his chances of actually winning.

Here's a link that even shows Fox, Fair, and Balanced viewers applauding his views!

GOP Debate Text-Vote Results

— 29% Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney

— 25% Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas

— 19% Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani

He did much better at CNN and MSNBC. So he is popular due to his views but most people are smart enough to realize the deck is stacked and the dealer's dirty. The major networks have all done their best to marginalize him. And it worked very well, of course.

That video on YouTube is a concise summary of his overall outlook which hasn't changed one wit since 1987. The gov't is the real enemy and must be stopped and cut back to ensure liberty, it's only true purpose.

Both parties are in on this. They are both equally guilty. They just have different things they champion all the the cost of the liberty and prosperity of us all. And this "us vs them" thing is to distract us all that they are both scamming us. Also, it's not by accident that Paul is a Republican. The old republican party values were the same ones that Paul is for - less gov't. The difference is that he actually means it and isn't just giving it lip service. Paul is the only true conservative in congress today.

This reminds me of the Leonard Cohen classic, "Everybody Knows" one of my all-time favorites!

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
Thats how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died

Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long stem rose
Everybody knows

That's why he is so popular! Because deep down, behind all the crap, everyone does.

Ron Paul is the candidate least likely to spend 4 years protecting the interests of our nation's Bourgeoisie. The Media will help us forget him, and they'll remind everyone of which candidates they should vote for. Like Hilary, the already-crowned winner of the Dems.

Another stat: Even though ABC hardly let him open his mouth, Ron Paul won the network's Republican debate according to an MSNBC online poll. I didn't know much about him before that debate, but he genuinely seemed like the only guy committed to the good of the common man. The rest are puppets, as are the Dems. I'm trying avoid being overly political. :whistling: ??? F.ck the media, that's what I'm really trying to say. Turn off your tv and open a book.

Amen! :D

History is where the present is born and books are the only place first-hand accounts can be found.

One of the problems with this tax issue is how political it is and how screwed up the US political scene is at present. There's so much misinformation distorting the real issues of the role of gov't in our country today. What made this country special was the idea that the sole, proper role of gov't is protecting our liberty. The tobacco tax is just one of many results of gov't influence in areas it has no business.

Matt,
I sent this to every congressmen from every place i've lived that i can remember. hopfully one of those ears will hear it.

I think instead of putting an additional tax on cigars the politians in favor of the tax should voluntarily donate their expense accounts, govt funded vehicles and trips and live more like the people they represent.

You said he "wins many straw polls," I asked you to provide proof of that which you did not. You said he's "so popular" and look at ANY nationwide poll and he's only pulling 2%.

You gave some results from a poll in May where he came in second which is not winning but it certainlly was interesting as I had not seen that so thanks, I guess....

Blaming the news media for his pitiful poll results is an old angle used by people who refuse to face reality and your conspiracy theories are just plain ridiculous.

I thought this thread was about the Democrat's tobacco tax? ??? Since it is, never mind trying to continue to defend your indefensible claims about Ron Paul, let's just stick to the topic at hand, okay?

People should not only vote out those Democrats (and the few Republicans that support this) but they should actively work on the campaigns of their opponents. The best thing you can do is to contribute money to their opponents next year. We've got two of these freshmen Democrats in Congress in Connecticut (Courtney and Murphy) who defeated Republicans in 2006 who NEVER would have voted for this.

Keep sending the letters to your Congressmen and Senators.

TSM - Books take too long to read. Unless someone can condense history and policy books into 8 second soundbites, it's pretty hopeless. I collect old history books (written as close in time to the event) and am amazed that there were always those that warned exactly what would happen but few would pay attention to facts. Facts are spun to suit the speaker but if you go to the source you often find the truth. This bill is a good example. It was overloaded with govt giveaways and misplaced punitive taxes hidden within a well meaning program that had worked in the past.

All this Democrat/Republican crap is getting tired. Let's revert back to "not discussing politics." My .02. I apologize for my earlier post on the media.

Double Amen!

That's the danger in discussing the tobacco tax. We should confine it to, "What can we do about it?"

The guiding principle of not discussing politics is for a good reason. It alway devolves into a pissing contest designed to denigrate others to bolster one's fragile ego. That's never was the purpose of this forum nor should it be the purpose of any rational discussion.

Writing congressmen and newspaper are really the only recourse we have, I think.

Million Herfer's March? ;)

Here's the results of the CNN Debate Poll for CC. If you want any more, I used google and so can you. Feel free to get the last word in as I will not respond. The standard excuse is it was pumped up by supporters. The standard answer is "whose?".

CNN VOTERS
1. Who do you think won the debate?
Ron Paul (60%)
2. Who seemed to know most about the issues?
Ron Paul (59%)
3. Who had the best one-liner or comeback?
Ron Paul (42%)
4. Who had the most disappointing performance at the debate?
Rudy Giuliani (32%)
5. Whose performance was most surprising?
Ron Paul (39%)
6. Whose campaign got the biggest boost from the debate?
Ron Paul (55%)
7. Who was the snappiest dresser?
Mitt Romney (49%)

This bill was set up to make Bush veto it. The Dems wanted (and got) the "Bush vetos Kids Healthcare Bill" headlines. That doesn't mean there's not a lot of Republican backing for the bill. SCHIP was invented by Rebublicans.

We need to focus our efforts on upholding the veto and getting our representatives to find a better funding mechanism when (not if) the bill is revised.
