I've worked hard in the past couple months in acquiring those rare, hard to find, and sometimes expensive sticks. Some I've tried, some I haven't. Now with winter being here and my smoking cutting back, I find myself torn. On one hand, since I'm not smoking that much at all in these months, I want to smoke the best I got, but on the other hand, I don't want to burn through the stuff that is seasonal or hard to come by. Not looking for advice, just seeing if others are like this. I can't afford a box of $20+ GOF, or Opus, ESG's, Expersso's, 1926's, etc, so my quantity is limited on these but damn I want to smoke them!!

Mon Ami,

As they used to say in Basic Training, "Smoke 'em, if you got 'em." Carpe diem - Sieze the day! (or.."pluck" the day.)
No better time than the present. Seriously...

If you have tried them and like them, smoke them if the mood suits you.
If you have never tried them... wait until the conditions for smoking are nice...(nice day, nice temp, nice friends, in Vegas after winning the big Jackpot...etc.) ...so you can get a better sense of "do I like them or not." - At least that is what works for me. I am a fair weather smoker.
I figure cigars are there to be smoked (unless you are aging them.)

...my .02

C&G...I want it now!

My only real rule regarding expensive cigars, is only to smoke them when my sinuses are clear :sign:

Other than that, I treat them no differently than my "budget" go to sticks.

Cigars are for smoking, and besides... other than other cigar smokers, who the hell are you going to impress with them? Your non smoking buddies will only look at you weird if you start raving about some "rare cigar" that they have never heard of before. lol

Kelly summed up my feeling on the matter pretty well

How will you know if you like them or not if you don't smoke them? What if that GOF you've been holding on to turns out to not be your bag of tea? My advice is buy two of each: one to smoke and one to hang on to. If it turns out you don't like them you can always trade or gift away....

I think some balance is the route to go. For example, I know I can usually always buy more '26's so I don't hesitate to have one if I'm in the mood. Conversely, would the Chili Pepper I finally managed to buy taste lots different or better than the two year old Opie I have? Probably not so I'd be lots more willing to blaze the Opie than the Chili Pepper. But, who knows? Truth is - anything I have and I do mean anything is subject to the flame if the occasion is right.

During the week, on the weeknights, I'm usually distracted by a million things so I usually don't smoke my "killer stash". Friday nights and Sunday afternoons are the times when I often get the time to really enjoy a special smoke, and anything is fair game if the planets align.

This year, I'm celebrating a "significant decimal" birthday and I can absolutely assure you that some of the rarest, nicest, best smokes I have will be sacrificed to the gods of flame. Count on it....

Cheers, gents - B.B.S.

Great post brother! Make sure you review that chili pepper when it goes up to the great smoke cloud in the sky!

The vast majority of cigars I'm holding off from smoking are ones that need more age.

As far as rarities go, I have one cigar that is a companion to one I've smoked already, that was well past its prime, and kind of historically interesting to me, so I probably will never smoke it. Other than that, everything's fair game, as long is the circumstances under which I smoke will make the cigars enjoyable.

From time to time I say to myself that I'm going to save something for a special occasion, but then convince myself that smoking the cigar is in itself a special occasion, and torch it up. :D

Boy, ain't that the truth.

November marks the beginning of sinus infection season here in Delaware.

I used to hoard almost anything with an MSRP of over $8, to the point where at one time ~ 75% of my stock were "Premiums" and daily smokes were almost non-existent. Instead of "saving" that many cigars for a special occasion (I decided I wouldn't have "that many" special occasions in my life) I smoked a few weekly.

Some of the highly rated cigars I had (several each of some) I found I didn't like (as Lurch alluded to above) so I traded / gifted them out.

Right now, the only things in the Humi considered "untouchable" for regular smoking are 3 GOFs (1 for daughters wedding, 1 for first grandchild, and 1 for ???), 2 honkin' big Opus (a Perfecxion #2 and a Double Corona), a '26 #1 Maddie and a '64 A Maddie.

The 2 Opus and the 2 Padrons are only being held because I need probably 2-1/2 hours of peace and quiet to enjoy these giants, and that's a rare thing.

THREADJACK:

WTF is the plural of Opus?? Opus'?? Opii??? Opussussess????

I've got a habit of not smoking my rarities, I feel almost as though I've started to move into more into a collecting phase than a smoking phase, I only smoke about five a week on average, as opposed to three a day that I used to.

When I was a kid I couldn't understand why my parents only hauled out the good stuff when visitors came by, the rest of the time we used the old cutlery and crockery.
I swore I would never be that way and we are not. In fact, the old stuff is thrown out often and we always use everything that we own.

Some guys are like this with cigars, hoard them for years so they can look at them..WTF ??? I smoke everything that looks good starting with my best.

Life is too short to smoke shit cigars.

wow, the responses have been great thus far. I feel like some others have said and I'm almost in a "collecting" stage where I have almost all premium smokes and no no go to or everyday smokes. I've always been a collector of sorts, but that has really gotten the better of me at this point in my "cigar life". The good thing though is I buy rare and expensive smokes in multiples of 3, one to smoke, two to keep. At this point its time to smoke one of each that I havent tried and make my decision at that point on if its one that I want to continue to buy up. Some great input from everyone. I love this hobby because everyone has different methods to their maddness and no one persons is better than another. Off to my b&m to get some Opus now. :)

I couldn't agree more Brian - great philosophy. My parents used the good stuff every day and I've tried to continue using the good stuff because - Who better than me to enjoy it?

JUST SAY NO TO PAPAER NAPKINS!

BTB: Opus is both singular and plural. :D

AND Brian I'll be back in San Diego this Tuesday afternoon, I hear there is a herf. If not we'll have to meet for a smoke.
Happy T-Day Y'all!!
