I just installed a Linux derivitive on an old Micron GX laptop. I am currently running Conical's Ubuntu 6.06.1 Dapper Drake. For the most part it has been pretty good. Still trying to figure out how install the Wireless card. I have been waist deep in command lines and help forums. But on the positive side, I am posting using the Ubuntu machine right now. If I can ever afford to buy a new desktop, I'll install this on my P4 box.

Does anyone else use Ubuntu or any other Linux derivitive on a regular basis? This is my first time using it at home. I had to maintain 3 Unix machines a few years ago. At that point I was just a robot following someone elses instructions, or using a manual to add, delete users or modules.

I just installed Ubuntu 7..10, Gutsy Gibbon, on a couple of old laptops. The friggin thing is amazing. Not only did it configure both old wireless cards, but it also configured an old HP printer when I attached it to the systems. One of the laptops only has 198 MB. It is a little slow, but seems completely stable. I am having a problem with getting Firefox to install the Adobe Flash player plugin. Other than that, it has been pretty smooth sailing.

I have a P3 w/ 256 ram running the 7.10 Kubuntu right now. For the most part, it is running apps at the same speed as when I was running XP on it. The biggest difference is networking. Wireless sux for me. My connection drops alot. BUt on the flipside, when I am on my Eth0, I achieve downloads 30kb faster than my desktop machine. The Kubuntu OS is much more adept at networking.

Goto Kubuntu.net and search Firefox. There is a command you can type in the terminal that will DL and install Firefox with full flash and java support. Before running the command, I couldn't run any of the Yahoo games, now I can run all of them. If you can't find the command, I'll dig it up for you.
