I noticed them on CI. I remember JFRs being a hit (I have one from a trade in my cooler somewhere, but I have not smoked one), and these say they're made in the same factory. Has anyone tried them? Are they any good?

I can't find any information about them online, so I have no idea if Pepin is involved with them in any way.
 
I went ahead and ordered a fiver of robustos ($18) along with Joe's daily deal yesterday. I'll try one when I get them and post a review.

I did receive them; I have one in my desktop acclimatizing for smoking. I'll burn it tomorrow night and post my thoughts.
 
Have not tried them yet but I believe these are made by Tabacalera Tropical. This is the write up that Cigars.com has.

Well, I smoked one yesterday, and I was decidedly non-plussed. It had a very sharp, metallic taste that smothered any other flavor. The smoke was harsh, and exhaling through the nose was just painful. It had a medium body, and I think there might be some decent flavor underneath, but it was quite hard to tell. I will not be smoking another one of these for several months; hopefully by then they will have mellowed out a little (or a lot!).

At this point, I cannot recommend buying them. If they turn out to be decent after some down time, I'll change my tune, but until then I'd avoid them.
 
Well, I must say I'm sorry to hear that. I have been hunting down a good price but have not found one so far. I think I will hold off till I hear more reviews. Thanks for your review.

That's sort of what this thread is about. We know it's made by the same factory, we are trying to see if they are comparable in taste. So far, though limited opinions, it doesn't look like they are up to par.
 
I smoked a JFR a few day's ago. It was a really nice cigar with a shiny wrapper and a great finish. I'm going back to my B&M for more on payday. I'm pretty sure the JFC's are an afterthought for the internet cigar sales and probably a different blend. Not to mention I don't think Pepin was involved. Also, based on the above review??.......
 
Well last night I smoked the one and only JFR I have, and it was definitely a much different cigar than the JFC. The JFR was a decent, medium, fairly tasty budget cigar. I may try one of the JFCs again soon to see if they're doing any better, but it's pretty clear to me they're not even close to the same quality.
