Though I've smoked a more than a few cigars over the years, I've only committed to this hobby a couple months back. I'm curious to know from you old timers... um, have you ever had a month go by where you didn't spend any money on cigars, smoking accessories, humidifying accoutrements, etc.?

Not that your answers will scare me away -- I love the grand pause that a good smoke brings to my day. But, mainly curious. My wallet looks bruised and American Express is asking me if I want to upgrade to a platinum card. I think they're getting the wrong idea about my lifestyle. Yikes.

I. Just. Can't. Stop.

Not yet. But I am only in the game for like 8 months so far. But I devote entirely too much time, money, and effort into it .:) WELL WORTH IT THOUGH!

Don

I'm still a newbie but I have been smoking for years. I have gone many months w/o spending any money on them....time....now that's a different story ;)

To answer your question, though it may not count based on the Old Timer prereq, No. I came close once but then for some stupid reason, i went over to C-Bid and kissed that goodbye.

Heh. That's the sense I'm getting in this hobby. A clear month could be easily dashed by one click to CigarBid.

Welcome. To. The. Club.

To answer your question, No. And whatever you do, don't go back and count how much you have spent! It will depress you...

Regards,

I am different than most here. I don't really consider myself a collector. Once I fill up my two desktop humidors (120count and 30 count) I'm happy and won't buy for quite a while. I do try to age my cigars a bit but there has been a couple times in the last few years that I have run completely out of cigars and I know that must be rare around here.

People smoke and buy for different reasons. Some, like Fyodor, just like to smoke cigars(I assume). Some are serious collectors(other end of the spectrum).

But I suspect most are in between like me. I buy some wanting to age them, some because I enjoy them and get a good deal, some to try something new, some because I believe the devaluation of the dollar will be a factor ;) .

But without doubt the fact that I smoke 4-5 cigars a day means I'd better buy some damn cigars!! :D

I can honestly say, that in the 35 years or so that I've been smoking cigars, I've never, ever gone a month without buying a box.

Doc.

Ok this post got me where I sit. No I have not made it a month without buying cigars or cigar products. I have been lucky in this point to not have a lovely wife suggesting I spend my money in better places ;) Since my second year of smoking kicked in and I started testing some of the product I have read about I seem to be getting visits from UPS, Fed-Ex and the post man just about every other week...not to mention my support of a couple local B&M's. To this point..no regrets so I expect it will be a while before I run out of Humidors, Coolers, and such to keep trying to fill. Ohhh and if you have any concerns stay away from C-bid that's the place that got me started on this roll.

The urge to buy is directly proportionate to the amount of storage space still available... for me at least. And then you go shopping for another cooler.

Right on, brother. A near-empty cooler is just unnatural. And having all full coolers makes me ancy. :D We recently bought another 48qt Coleman to bring food back from NYC over Christmas holiday and guess what? Yeah, it's about half full already.

But in answer to the OP's question, I've often gone a month without buying anything, but then again I'm sitting on enough cigars to last me something like 15 years at my current rate of smoking even if I never buy another.

It's definitely a tough call to not buying anything for a month intentionally, especially with all the good deals popping up here and there. I have regained a bit of self control and didn't buy stuff for a month here and there. In the end, I feel if I can't control my impulses, not necessarily pertaining to cigar purchasing habits, then they will destroy me.

Ditto that. I haven't bought anything of consequence in a while... the humidors are filled with what I like, plenty of stock to age and smoke... so I guess I've reached "critical mass" to an extent. I don't spend a lot on cigars on a regular basis, and maintenance is just filling up the humidification units now and then.

Fire sale, FIRE sale, FIRE SALE !!!!!

Feels good, don't it? :)

But seriously, a certain level of stockage has an inertia associated with it. I tend to disregard the "latest and greatest flavors of the week" and really only get anxious when 1) promising cigars pop up, and the urge to stock up hits (like the Trinidad Ingenios) 2) imminent price rises (Pepin) or 3) announced product line deletions.

I'm more than happy just spritzing the kitty litter with a little distilled water every month or so.

Thats alot of sticks.

:D If you smoke a dozen a year, it isn't much at all. If you smoke like Doc smokes, then that's a freakin' lot of cigars. I'm somewhere in between the two. ;)
