Just thought I'd post one more time on this. Most importantly, Aidan is doing much better, he's got his IV hookup (PICC) line out and he's just finishing up some oral antibiotics. His chest x-rays are cleared and he's got most of his energy back. He gets to go back to pre-school on Monday, and he started spring soccer this past week. We're afraid he's going to have a long-lasting phobia of doctors and hospitals as a result of this, and hopefully he can get over it. Well, he'd better since his Mom is a doctor and works in a hospital!
Another side note that I'd like to mention is how much having decent insurance has saved us. I believe our grand total at this point is well north of $50k for his treatment, transport, time in the ICU, surgeries and meds. Because we've got good insurance, our total out of pocket probably won't exceed $4500ish. Like most other parents, regardless of insurance I would have insisted he get the best treatment possible regardless of cost, thankfully it won't ruin us financially.
