I will admit that I am a geek when it comes to the comic book movies, so last night I went to see Iron Man. I had a couple of reservations going into this movie:
1. Robert Downey Jr - I could not in any way picture him as the lead in a superhero movie
2. I knew basically nothing about the Iron Man story or character.

I have to admit that this movie is probably the best comic book movie I have seen. It had a good story, good character development, and it was just well made. Downey was suprisingly very good, and I am pleasantly suprised by that. So if you like comic book movies, sci-fi, or action flicks this one is definitely worth seeing.

My thoughts exactly. Saw it last night with the woman and we both thought it was great. Very suprised and I think Robert Downey did a hell of a job. Definitely a must see in the theaters.

Robert Downey Jr as Iron-man is great. Iron-man had a huge drinking problem that was a constant in the storyline. But I can't wait for the Hulk movie hopefully its not as cheesy as the last one.

Edit: I took off monday to see it

Being a comic book fanatic since I was 4 years old (born in 1965), I've been looking forward to the day where Marvel characters got their due on the silver screen. I remember when most of the announcements that my favorite heroes of the printed page would leap into an equally dramatic and exciting movie always led to major disappointments time and again (i.e. the Fantastic Four movie that never appeared in the late 80s; the direct to video Captain America mess; the constant changing of director's for the Spiderman movies throughout the 80s). Once the Xmen movie hit the screen, I knew the age of Marvel movies had arrived.

Having grown up reading comics during the late silver age/bronze age, I have internalized the characterization of many of Marvel's greatest characters. Its because of this that I was mildly disgusted with the way Spiderman was portrayed (though I did like aspects of the 3 movies). My favorite movies have been Ghost Rider, Fantastic Four 2, and The Incredible Hulk. Now, having seen coming attractions of Iron Man and reading many positive reviews of this new movie, I think the bar has been raised for future Marvel movies.

I can live with SOME creative embellishments to the history of certain characters (i.e. Peter Parker being able to spin webs from his wrist versus the web-shooter apparatus), but there are certain embellishments I can do without (i.e. the Green Goblin's costume; the origins of Bruce Banner's gamma radiation exposure). With this new Iron Man movie, from what I've seen they've come pretty close to keeping with the original character's history and demeanor as an egotistical playboy who turns to defending humankind after his experiences with terrorists.

In short, I can't wait to see this movie (this Monday, 9pm!).

Now, I've been told that one should sit all the way through the credits until the end (much like the 2nd Xmen movie).

Nuff said,
Dirwood

Hey Fivebyfifty,
The storyline arc that you speak of was (I believe) called Demon in the Bottle and was a spectacular run of issues when I was a teenager (if I remember correctly, issues 120 to 128 or there abouts). Bob Layton embellished David Michelinie's mind-blowing storyline involving Stark's issues with drinking. Coincidentally, if you head over to Borders/Barnes & Noble or any bookstore of their ilk you'll find a nice graphic novel collecting all these issues. They are a MUST READ if you've never read those issues before, and a pivotal point in Stark's/Iron Man's career.

Gotta love comics!

Without a doubt, my all time favorite "Super Hero"!

Have the complete set from T.O.S. #39, up through The Invincible Iron Man #130, all purchased from news stands.
Lord, am I a geek, or what ... lol!

Looking forward to seeing the movie tonight with the Mrs.!

We saw Iron Man yesterday afternoon, and loved it! Robert Downey was a perfect Tony Stark.

As for the Hulk, Edward Norton as Bruce Banner this time is a better fit IMO.

I read somewhere a month ago that Downey is making a cameo as Stark in the new Hulk movie (previews for that & Batman look good!!), supposedly paving the way for a live-action Avengers movie in the future!! Don't know if that's true, but I hope so.

Also a rumor floating around that there is a script for a live-action Justice League, hopefully using the current Batman & Superman actors. That'd be cool too.

Just Fandango'd tickets to the 12:45 show this afternoon. I'll let you guys know what I and Ms. B.B.S. think......

I am looking forward to seeing this. I have always thought that Downey was a superb actor, and to hear that he did so well is gratifying.

Just got back.

Very well done movie, modernized, but preserved the "legend", and Robert Downey, Jr. was a great cast as Tony Stark! Gwenythe Paltrow was a hot Pepper Potts, and

THE GREY SUIT!!

Too cool!!

First movie I've gone to in half a year or more. I've been a fan of Robert Downey, Jr., for a while, now, and I've thought Gwyneth Paltrow's incredibly attractive ever since I saw Shakespeare in Love, so this movie really sits well with me. :) I'm going to probably see it again, maybe, with a friend of mine.

Oh, and yeah, sit through the end credits.

Absolutely, Robert Downey Jr is an excellent actor, and it is good to see him getting the praise he deserves for once.

Saw the movie yesterday. No doubt, it was a GREAT movie. Gweneth looks hawt, to be sure...... A real plot, great acting, and of course incredible special effects. Guess we take that for granted now, don't we..?? Is it me or did Jeff Bridges put on a few...??...

Oh, by the way, I'd say the Justice League sequel rumor is lots more than a rumor. Stick around until after the credits...all the credits:

".....I'm Nick Fury....."....not telling who it is...... :whistling:

Cheers, guys - B.B.S.

Got your comic book universes a bit confused ...lol! Justice League would be DC (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, etc.), while The Avengers (Iron Man, The Hulk, Captain America, Thor, etc.) is in The Marvel Universe.

Told you I was an old comic book geek!

....whoops, you're right. But, the tease with "some dude" introducing himself as "Nick Fury" is definitely in there, after the last of the last of the credits. "Some dude"....no spoilers here.....

Well, we're going to see this in about an hour. My 4 yr old is is pretty excited, and is walking around the house saying "I am Iron Man". Had me rummaging through my music to see if I had the Sabbath Song.
I'm wondering why I havent heard it played relentlessly on the radio.

At least it's not David Hasselhoff, he starred in the 1998 made for TV version of Nick Fury agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. ...BTW, it sucked, IMHO!
