When I was a kid, I can remember waking up in the middle of the night and having to turn on a light or face the risk of severe toe injury while trying to blindly make my way to the bathroom. It was always very dark inside the house unless there was a full moon or a night-light was left on.
I noticed this morning though how that has changed with all the new technology we have. I got up around 2:00am to get a drink of water from the kitchen and as I sat on the edge of the bed yawning and rubbing my eyes I was taken by the realization of how easy it was to see within the house. Why? There's these little green lights everywhere casting a pale, almost surreal green glow throughout the house. Standing up I began to look around and actually start to take notice of these little green lights.
Starting in my bedroom there is the green light from the digital alarm clock, the glow of the clock on the dvd/vcr, the green indicator light telling me the smoke detector is doing its' job and the emergency flashlight in the corner patiently awaiting the day when it can spring into action to provide us with light in the event of a power failure. I exit the room and catch the faint glow of the charger where my electric razor and the electric toothbrushes sit in the master bathroom. Moving down the hallway I reach my youngest son's room and look in...there is the glow from his cell-phone indicating it is charged and ready to perform its' duty, his clock and the battery charger he uses to recharge his MP3 player batteries all adding to the eerie glow of the house. Continuing on, I have the reassuring light from the hallway smoke detector and the carbon monoxide detector telling me the family is safe from hidden dangers. I look into my oldest sons room and like his brother, there is the green dot of his cell phone, the power indicator light on his satellite TV receiver (he forgot to turn it off) and the seemingly out of place red LED indicator's letting me know his guitar amplifier and effects pedals were left on as well. I turn and head past the kids bathroom and there, glowing faintly, is the green light from the emergency flashlight plugged into the wall; as I pass the hallway leading to my office I see a faint greenish glow emanating from there as well. Curious now, I head down the hall and see several pinpoints of green light coming from the speaker system plugged into my computer, my cell phone sits there on the desk now fully charged, as is my MP3 player and PDA. Oh and let's not forget the digital clock and the DSL modem lights.
Remembering my initial mission to get some water, I head back out towards the kitchen and pass the living room where another smoke alarm acknowledges to me that he is diligently working and another emergency flashlight is standing ready to assist. Finally entering the kitchen I am inundated by a convention of little green lights from all over. There is my wife's cell phone, the final emergency flashlight, the clock on the stove, the clock on the microwave, another battery charger for the Gameboy's, the power sweeper in the corner says he is charged and ready to work and the stereo is blinking it's green cry for help 12:00 - 12:00 - 12:00 12:00 (I guess I need to set that clock some day).
By now I have been up long enough for my eyes to fully adjust to the light and as I look around the entire house is lit in soft comforting pale green light, so well that one would never have to worry about stubbing a toe in here. Just then I am blinded by bright glaring white light and the word's "honey? what are you doing up? is everything ok?" coming from my wife as she turns on the overhead kitchen light. Recovering quickly I assure her everything is fine but smoehow I couldn't find a way to explain to her that I know this because of all the comforting little green lights.
