Just two weeks after a Nobel Prize highlighted theoretical work on subatomic particles, physicists are announcing a startling discovery about a much more familiar form of matter: Scotch Tape. It turns out that if you peel the popular adhesive tape off it's roll in a vacuum chamber, it emits X-rays. The researchers even made an X-ray image of one of their fingers.

More then 50 years ago , some Russian scientist reported evidence of X-rays from peeling sticky tape off glass. But the new work demonstrates that you can get a lot of X-rays , a study co-author says.

"We were very surprised," said Juan Escobar. "The power you could get from just peeling tape was enormous.

Escobar suggested that with some refinements, the process might be harnessed for making inexpensive X-ray machines for paramedics or for places where electricity is expensive or hard to get. After all, you could peel tape or something simialar in such cases with just human power. like cranking.

Wow. Nice article Sack. Now it's time to go back to my Chemistry and Physics books! :sign:

Somewhere a class action lawsuit is being prepared
....naah. Only happens in a complete vacuum.

So, what my wife and I were wondering is what were folks doing peeling scotch tape in a complete vacuum in front of an X-Ray detector. Not something you think to do everyday. Those doggone wacky physicists....what a bunch of party animals.....

I was thinking the same thing, what would make a person think about X-rays and plastic tape in this context is beyond me. Guess that's why i'm not a scientist. ???

Perhaps one of them opened up a Band-Aid in the dark and noticed the faint blue sparks of static electricity and based their idea off of that. It only works with the kind of Band-Aid with the wrappers you peel apart, not the ones where you pull out the red string and then have to use your teeth to get at the damn thing as you continue to bleed.
