Agreed -- ANY hand made product can suck horribly. I've had Cubans that made me want to vomit, from marcas that I generally like. It happens.

There's really no way they could "test" every cigar beyond visuals and construction before it leaves the factory.

As I said before, it may very well be that he just does not like this cigar... and that's personal taste for ya. But the taste profile he posted just doesn't sound like it's in the right zone for an Añejo. Either a dud from Fuente, or it was stored poorly prior to him receiving it, would be my guess.

Yeah, I'm still scratching my head on the flavors he quoted. Does Fuente use a draw tester to check for tight bunches?
 
Moki, you have to be one of the most patient guys I have ever heard of! I am certainly a lot more harsh with my critique of a new cigar. I usually buy 5ers to sample, but only recently. I used to make up my mind with 2, and still do when it is a more expensive stick. If they can't impress me with 5 cigars (or 2), I am not going to waste anymore time on them.

I certainly couldn't do what you do and keep going back again and again to a cigar I didn't enjoy, just to see if I had gotten a bad run.


I either had a hidden mould Shark (oh god, that is next to my other premium singles), or more likely as Mark Twain mentioned: a badly rolled one. I did have to use the draw poker twice, and it did keep going out on me. Bad luck I guess.
 
Aside from the "pepper" taste you described, the rest doesn't even remotely sound like any Shark I've ever smoked. This review certainly is strange...

I agree with Moki. I've occasionally had cigars that shocked the crap out of me. I remember a few years back receiving one of my favorites - an ISOM Monte #2 from a very reliable source. I'd never had an issue with any "real" Monte 2's - until this one. it was just incredibly rancid, bitter and nasty. I have no clue what caused to to be, but it was. I've not had another bad one since.

I'd try another one - from a different batch. it's likely it was not properly stored prior to you picking it up.
 
Sorry to hear about your experience. I have never smoked the shark, but I have 2 in the humi waiting for the right moment. But any other one I have had I have never had a problem with. Ther is always a bad apple out of the bunch.
 
I just pick up my first 2 sharks from my local shop. Was going to save them for a while. Now my curiousity is peaked. I'm going to light one up and see if I like it.

I smoked one Thursday night because I didn't get to it during Infinity's memorial.
I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it!
Anejos have been hit or miss for me lately.
I'm glad that particular one was a hit!

I actually had a bad Opus xXx a couple of nights ago. One in the last two years. Try another.
 
My experiences with sharks are good so far, smoked quit a lot of them, the are easily to get in Holland.
Usually have a few singles in the humidor.

FWIW I had an Anejo 50 the other night from '03 or '04 that was totally off. It was producing enough smoke but tons of tar and the flavor was way off. I decided to reclip it to see if opening it up more could help with the tar and the cigar straightened itself out right away. After that it was what an older Anejo should be. My point is, like Mike said there are a ton of reasons you may have gotten an 'off' cigar so I wouldn't write them off yet.
 
I typically try to smoke at least 5, and sometimes 10 from differant boxes.
I often try certain "popular" cigars every season to see how they are smoking.
 
This is one of my biggest problems with the Sharks.

You would think that such a rare and popular smoke would have better quality control. Seems they have been suffering from a number of issues the last couple years. Every time I buy one I feel like I am at the roulette table.
 
I smoked one on Saturday that was from '06, and it was damn near perfect in every way. I haven't yet smoked one from this years batch, but I'm hoping I don't get a dud.
 
I'd bet dollars to donuts that you had a moldy shark. Last year's release was notoriously plagued by mold issues. I had sharks from last year's release from 3 different B&M's. Almost all of the sharks from two of them had mold growth. I smoked one of them that I wiped the mold off of, and that was a bad idea! Not from the nicotine, because I've never gotten woozy off of an Anejo, but it tasted horrible and about 1/3 of the way in I just didn't feel well at all. I put it out and actually dissected the thing because the experience was so unlike any I had ever had with these before.(I think the pics may still be in the Gallery) I would try to acquire another, either older or newer than those from '07 just to be sure. Either way I'll bet you're experience will be much different.

I can attest to the "trying 8-10 cigars before making up your mind" school of thought. It took me 8 Montecristo #2's to get a good one. Everyone I had was a bigger disappointment than the last. I was down to my last one 2 weeks ago and I decided this would indeed be my last. With over two years on it, it was one of the best cigars I'd had in a long time. Now I gotta get more! :sign: .... It's a vicious cycle! ;)
 
The Sharks I have from 07' really honestly do suck, and I'm not joking. I bought them from a very good source who knows what he's doing in terms of storage and whatnot, but for some reason the moment they stepped into my humidor, they all sprouted mold.

I lost 10 of them from that batch, AKA HALF THE BOX. That said, the ones that weren't completely afflicted with mold, I did smoke, and they smoked like garbage compared to their Anejo brothers of the same year but different vitola. I don't know what it is, but Sharkies can be moldy...it is a sad thing to pay that much for a cigar to have it suck.


That said, I tried one of the current releases of Anejo #77s, and it was AMAZING. Not at all sweet like the previous releases, but nice and full-bodied with a hint of spice to go with it. I'd say go again Macy, but it sounds like you're done with Anejos... More for me I suppose, but you're missing out buddy. :(
