Is it just me?

I can't seem to smoke a cigar much past the band. Doesn't matter if the cigar has a band or not or if I remove it once it gets close. At about the last 2" I just don't like it anymore. I know I'm knew and I don't particularly care for most of the flavors I encounter, seems to me to be an acquired taste. I see lots of posts about I smoked it to the nub, I've only done that once or twice but other than that I just don't seem to enjoy the last couple inches of any cigars.

I'm the same way, have hardly smoked anything to the nub. Mainly because of time, and tastes don't do it for me.

Same here. It's a rare thing when I smoke beyond an inch and a half.

I just don't like the bitter taste that usually develops at that end of the cigar. I've only really nubbed a handful of cigars.

I used to do the same thing, and while I'd love to hear some suggestions for how to best nub a good smoke (like how to handle it), I don't stop until I start to injure myself on a good one. I'll take em down as far as I can now (usually less than an inch).

My understanding is that the issue in the last two inches is two-fold. #1, build up of tar makes it bitter. #2, Unknowingly, you're overheating it, and thus leading to some bitterness.

If you get a draw that tastes bitter, blow out through the cigar, and set it down for a minute or two to cool off, then try it. Works for me.

Sometimes if you give it a rest, and maybe a purge, it will sweeten back up. Just let it sit more than a minute or so.

Some folks smoke too fast, and the cigar willl become acrid. Also sipping will keep the cigar cool, and keep the flavors nice.

I usually put it down when I get to the band, unless I am really enjoying it then I will almost eat the nub lol.

Almost every cigar I smoke there will be less than a 1/2" let that I toss. Its rare that I will smoke a cigar down to the thickness of a Xikar cutter but its happened plenty of times. I'm sure I will be adding a couple more to the list on May 4th, 2009.

I think smoking to the nub is an art, it requires the proper light and proper attention during the smoke so it doesn't require relights and touchups as I think these are what creates the bitter/harsh taste. Be careful with the light, pay attention so you don't get behind and you may start enjoying the nub. Just my .02

My favorite part of most cigars is right after the band. Couldn't tell you why.

Depends on the cigar for me. Ive done it on some, some get too harsh, and some I dont have the time.

Madmonk, Cigarstone, thanks for the tips. I'm sure that I'm doing those things. I've noticed that my RH is a little to high also as I'm having to re-light almost everything. The next week or two will get better as I've adjusted the RH slightly.
Glad to hear it's not just me that has this problem. Way to relaxing of a hobby.

If the cigar does have a band on it I always take it off before I even start smoking. Usually I put the cigar down when I get around the area the band was, but I have had a few cigars that I didn't want to put down and have burned myself on!

I just nubbed a Johnny-O! Coronas Extra Pigtail with over a year on it. So there! :p

I don't know if anybody knows for sure but it seems to me that a change in RH could take a long time to reach the middle of the cigar and especially if there are a bunch of cigars in a pile in a humi.

I have toothpicks at the ready!
I agree with laying it down and letting it cool. Purges always help too.
Some might call me a savage. Some may admire. I really don't care.

It all comes down to taste and preference.

I smoke a little slower, and purge a bit, toward the end of cigar. I smoke most down to about 1/2" . . . once my fingernails start smoldering, it's time to call it quits!

Probably a lot has to do with smoking technique. Too quick, too forceful, and a cigar will heat up and become unpleasant. I'm always disappointed, though, when a cigar doesn't nub out for me.

This is balanced out by the occasional one I pitch halfway in because it sucks.

The major factor for me is the cigar. I always toothpick a Trini Reyes and Sig I or II. Most of the Pepin smokes I burn my fingers at the end. RH can be a factor and how oily the cigar gets at the end. But if it's a good cigar stored properly it will usually be a nubber! ;)

On the other hand, a poorly constructed cigar will actually spit tar at you near the end! :(
