308 tracer round takes an unexpected turn

Hmmm...I have some misgivings about that ".308 round."

Edit: Nevermind, the post says it's a tracer round. Looked like a firework or computer effect to me. But if it's a tracer round, why not? :)

Edited to add:

Yeah it was pretty impressive to watch the 600 yards flight!

I thought it was a computer trick the first time I saw it, it looked like a firework or some type of video edit that made it do that, but if it's a tracer round I can see that happening. The makeup of those rounds are changed by the chemicals, so it is feasible it'd bounce off of things like that. I just thought it looked a bit fake at first, but I suppose it isn't!

It's definitely real! It ricocheted because it is a full metal jacket, which I didn't realize when he was setting up to fire. I don't like bullets going places they aren't intended.

I see big caliber tracer rounds ricochet fairly regularly...looked legit to me. I loves me some big guns!

When tracers do that, it's not the round itself bouncing. It's only the chemical tracer element being fragmented from the round upon impact. I see this happen all the time when we're shooting our XM-218s. Now, if one of our API rounds was doing that in mid-air, then I'd be worried.

Michael, I had heard that before but I heard that if the pyrotechnics come off they just tumble a short distance away.

I dunno, but the tree they were aiming at looked to be at the crest of a hill to me. Perhaps I was mistaken

It was simply the line we picked so the camera-man knew where to film. As the video shows, the bullet hit a corn field well below the horizon

Just realized that you were there. Thought you just found this on the net.

Tracers do that all the time. We have a huge MG shoot here in AZ, and the night fire with tracers is worth making a trip just to watch! Tracers are bouncing all over the place from hitting rocks, steel, etc.
