Panel Urges Smaller Doses of Painkillers

Any bets on the number of years that pass until they find that this isn't the case? I'll take 7 years.
 
I can't find Regular Strength Tylenol anywhere. Sometimes, Extra Strength is just too much... But it's good to know the odds are my liver will fail due to Tylenol, not alcohol.

Yeah, the AMA and FDA are not exactly the most reliable organizations on earth ;) Remember all the sugar substitutes over the years Cyclamates, Saccharin, Aspartame, Sucralose....they were all the greatest thing since sliced bread until a few million dollars worth of them were sold and then BAM! "Don't take em they'll kill ya!"

I still won't take acetaminophen because my dad's liver specialist when he had heart surgery scared the shit out of me by telling me that acetaminophen is probably the single worst thing you can put in your system.

Clint, I'll take 2:1 they find out it's even worse than they originally thought. Make no mistake about it, this stuff is like poison, like many/most other otc or prescription drugs. Sure they mask or alleviate the symptoms of one problem, but they always cause another or several others for which you have to take some other medication(s), which then in turn eventually causes another problem for which you have to take some other medication, etc., and on and on.
 
I think the biggest problem with Acetaminophen is the people who may be less aware and are on prescription meds that already contain Acetaminophen, such as Vicodin, and then take OTC Tylenol on top of it. Vicodin can contain 325mg up to 1000+mg of Acetaminophen in them already. Add in some extra strength Tylenol on top of it and you're asking for a liver wrinkling cocktail.


P.S. I prefer Ibuprofen
 
It has widely been known for a long time that one of the metabolite of acetaminophen is toxic to the liver. The effects increase with the consumption of alcohol when taking the drug. But if these things have all been known for already for a long time, why are they stepping in now? Also for those that need to continue taking larger doses for pain (if there is no alternative), you could always just take more. Just cause they drop the dose recommendation will not prevent people from continuing with a higher dose regiment.

I avoid Tylenol and artificial sweeteners like the plague. Read the book ,"Excitotoxins, The taste that Kills" by Russel Blaylock. Most of these substances along with the likes of things like MSG actually excite the neurons in your brain to the point where they die. Splenda actually contains a covalently bonded chlorine that can't be disassociated by the body and on a molecular level is closer to the structure of DDT then any other compound.
 
I definitely stay away from Tylenol as much as I can...even when I need it. Some call me crazy, but I've always tried to take as little as possible.

Smart man! I've only taken Tylenol, or any product containing acetaminophen, a handful of times in the last several years. Usually only during cold season and only because practically every cold/flu symptom remedy has acetaminophen in it. Artificial sweeteners too! You have to read labels carefully because it's in a lot of products you wouldn't even expect. Certain juices with reduced sugar, high fiber cereals and a host of others.

If you can take aspirin, have your doctor prescribe Percodan; same drug. Or even the straight oxycodone called Oxy IR. Working in the ER I've seen several deaths from overwhelming liver failure from Tylenol- but we're talking about someone taking a hundred tablets.
 
I generally only take Aleve, which I'm sure isn't great either. I only take it when I know there is a hangover coming my way (which is rare) because it lets me sleep through the beginning.

Waking up to a splitting headache is no bueno.
 
I typically use Ibuprofen when I need a bit of painkilling, and it's a bonus because Costco sells it in bulk at a very reasonable price.
