Way over MSRP

The assistant manager at my local B&M was frantically busy one day and failed to drop everything to take a call from "Ms. Padron."

It was YEARS before we saw Padrons in the humidor again, and my understanding is the owner had to do some major groveling.

Another thing that can be happening with a new shop, particularly where high end stuff is concerned, is they might be making purchases in the secondary market . . . and marking up accordingly. TW here can't seem to get an Opus account from Fuente no matter how many cigar store Indian statues they give them (long story) so they've been known to buy boxes from one of the regular customers---and then put them out in the humidor at double MSRP.

Nobody in the know ever buys them, of course, but they get to say they have Opus in stock.

As much as I love Padrons.. if I opened a shop and was treated like a second class citizen.. I'd refuse to carry the cigar. While they are a good seller and you stand for good markup, you can survive as a shop without Padron.

If you're a new store, you will be put on a wait list to have your acct opened with most manufacturers. But you say that you can survive without Padron? That may be true...but why would you want to?

I'm only saying that because it's one of the best, if not THE BEST manufacturer out there. Would you prefer a Te-Amo Jake? :laugh:

At the B&M Finck's opened in San Antonio (an entire house turned into a walkin humidor . . . awesome) as soon as you enter from the glassed in register area, on your right is about 15-20' of five shelf slant, roughly chest high, with open boxes of virtually everything Padron makes.

Facing that is another five-shelfer, flat, with the sealed boxes. They had about 10 boxes of 80th last time I was there, and everything was less than I generally see it going for online.

This thread makes me wonder if someone's holding the deed on their first born child! :sign:

We have a store in Leesburg charging and getting $99 for Opus Tins because they are not an Opus account. The other prices are okay, so the regulars Don't buy Opus there. We have one in Ashburn way over priced on all boutique and HTF cigars, and to make matters worse, his humidor is poorly kept. I mentioned his pricing to him and he blew it off, so we avoid his store.

For me, it's worth a little extra driving time to go where I have a relationship and hope to find the sticks they don't carry on line. That works for me.

Look at it this way. In 5 or 6 years those opus tins will be a steal at $99 if nobody is buying them.

I suppose though if your clientele was looking for a reliable source for Padron cigars and there was good money to be made by carrying their products, wouldn't you bite the bullet and accept the bad with the good?

The markup on Padrons isn't as much as most cigar companies out there. However, I just think that you can't call yourself a cigar store and NOT carry Padrons.

The markup on Padrons isn't as much as most cigar companies out there. However, I just think that you can't call yourself a cigar store and NOT carry Padrons.

It's been a few months since making a trip to any of the local B&M's, but I don't recall either of them here carrying Padrons. I'm certain I'm missing out on something good

I wouldnt approach him. I would walk the other way. Plenty of cigar stores.
