Ok, so, I really am going out on a limb here telling you all this, and I fully understand that the amount of gaff you guys will probably give me over this is all in jest, so have at it! :D

I'm 24 years old right now, 25 this November, and back when I turned 21 my buddies and I decided we would all go to BJ's Restaurant to celebrate my birthday. Needless to say, like the great group of gents they are, they got me absolutely plastered. Really, really plastered. Now, prior to that I was pretty good at holding my liquor, but despite that they wrecked me. Let's just say that after all was said and done, I STILL can not even sip Patron without an immediate and violent urge to vomit. Pretty much all hard liquor does this to me now it seems, unless I'm drinking a really lightly spiked foo foo drink like an Adios.

Well, honestly I don't drink like that anymore, my party hard days are done. I have stuck to beer since that fateful day, and I love beer. I love tasting it, trying new beers, and just enjoying it for what it is. I don't drink to get drunk, the same as I don't smoke cigars to get a nicotine high. You guys get the point, obviously.

Now to the point of all this: I really, really would like to be able to enjoy a good scotch whisky or nice, smooth rum. I bought a bottle of Dewar's 12 Year Special Reserve scotch, as I had seen quite a few people talk about how good it is, ect ect. Well, I put a couple ice cubes in a tumbler, poured perhaps a fingers worth and then added a small bit of cold spring water, took a small sip....and almost lost my lunch. I couldn't taste anything, probably due to my immediate nausea, and when it hit my stomach it really turned me green. I'm at an utter loss here. How the hell do I overcome this? Should I just bite the bullet, buy a bottle of Jack Daniels, and take a couple shots a week until I get used to hard liquor again?

I really, really am embarrassed about all this, but I figure I need to just deal with it and figure out what the hell to do. I would love to try some nice Rums and such, but I fear that I'll buy a bottle, take one sip, and then it will end up sitting in my cabinets unused. Again, I realize I was (and still am when compared to the years and wisdom of many of you here) a dumb, young guy doing exactly what most other young, dumb guys my age did, but do I have to be punished for the rest of my life, rendered unable to enjoy the tastes of good scotch and such? :(

Try a nice Dark Aged Rum. I get more vanilla and caramel from those.

Check out some of AVB's reviews.

My favorite inexpensive rum is "Old Monk" 7 yr old.

I did the same thing with vodka. Had somewhere around 20 shots in the matter of a few hours.

It took me quite a few years before I could take a shot of anything straight again. You need to ease back into it by getting tipsy/drunk on mixed drinks (not foo-foo drinks) for a bit - that's how I did it. Drink whiskey and coke or try vodka, sprite, and grenadine.

Nice tip on the rum MadMonk. If whisky/whiskey is what you want to be able to drink I would suggest buying something less expensive and mix it with cola or un-cola, or water for that matter. If you still get that feeling use more mix until you can tolerate the taste. Be patient and go slowly as once you get sick from putting something in your body it takes a while to get over the feeling it's going to happen again. Over time you should be able to cut back on the amount of mix until you are down to a single ice cube or a few drops of water.

BTW, Dewar's 12 is one of my favorite blends. I read where they plan to release an 18 year here in the states but haven't seen it yet.

Edit: b.dawson beat me to it!

sigar_zealot posted exactly what I was going to post. Try a bourbon and coke and go from there. One of the first times I got drunk in college was off a bottle of Jack Daniels that a friend and I took shots of till we couldn't see straight. I couldn't smell JD for close to 7 years later without getting queezy and other whiskies did close to the same thing. I started drinking JD with coke and that helped me get used to the smell and taste. Now I can drink it on the rocks and could probably do a shot. It's all about patience and allowing your body to get used to hard liquor again.

I will also say that I never liked whisky/whiskey by itself till about 3-4 years ago and I'm 32. It's not for the faint of heart. You might just be a beer only kinda guy. I know plenty like that.

JD needs all the help it can get and Coke is the way it can taste decent, unlike good bourbon which doesn't need such things.

In any case it is time you need, I got hammered on Seagram's 7 once and it took at least 15 years before I didn't gag smelling it. I still try to avoid it when possible.

Thanks guys for the tips, I'll try the mixed drinks route. I don't think I will ever bother trying to get used to tequila again...that stuff is just evil. I'm mainly looking to enjoy sipping rums, whiskey, scotch, bourbon, ect. Mainly rum though, it's sweet enough that I can tolerate a very, very tiny bit of it already.

Damn you Patron, damn you. :D

I'll tell ya what, I was about the same at your age or maybe a hair younger. I had a few bad experiences on Jack and Old Crow and swore I would never do that sh!t again. But now I relish bourbon and have really grown to appreciate it for what it is; a sipping whiskey. Scotch is the same way. Smelling and tasting can bring out flavors I never thought would be present in liquor, but they are there. I guess another way to look at it is if you're looking to get drunk, get some Jack or tequila. But if you want a truly relaxing and enjoyable drink, read Ray's reviews and note the flavors he reports. He has been spot on with what I've sampled so find some flavors you enjoy and then go find a bottle that he thinks has those flavors. Scotch or bourbon, he has them both covered pretty darned well.

I'm gonna have to buy a bigger hat now.

I can help you with the new hat. You want a John Deere or Pioneer hat? They both grow on trees here in Iowa.

Well here is my 2 damned cents

Ray is spot on about all things Liquor, this is true. The bit about the coke and easing into it is a great idea, but it can also be done with rum.

It is, to me, a tricky thing. You can save yourself a lot of money by buying Jack or Captain and mixing them, but you will never really get great quality by drinking them straight, so the "tapering them off" method does not work in some aspects. Flip side of that is lets say you use as something light like Woodford Reserve as the whiskey and Zacapa 23 as the Rum. Now you are mixing stuff that needs no mixer, but it sure will go down easier and tapper off better. That said you are going to pay for it (MI prices 35 and 45 a bottle vs 18ish for the other guys).

Just something to think about. I always say quality first when it comes to spirits. I would rather drink less but better. That said, this is just my 2 damned cents

Have fun!

I agree with the quality first thing, simply based off the fact that the majority of the time in life, you get what ya pay for. Do you gents have any suggestions as to what a good mix would be for rum? Obviously I didn't say, "the best mix", as we all know that taste is subjective. I am still eager for suggestions! My dad owns a deli, so he said he can order me whatever I want straight from the distributor, so I should get a pretty good deal on it. Suggest a rum for me! :) Thank you all so far for the great info!

Rum is for salty sea dogs, you don't want to associate with that type. Get some bourbon.

Hey man, I did the same thing with bacardi limon. One night I drank a bottle at a friend's parents' house in college. I have not touched it since. I don't go the route of mixed drinks. I simply don't care for them. I do have the occasional margarita here and there, but at home I drink it straight. The only thing I can't drink straight is 151. I'd start with a good bottle of brandy, perhaps Asbach Uralt. That's a good brandy in my opinion and it's not overpowering. It tastes pretty good too and I've been told by a german friend that they mix it with coca-cola over there the same way we mix jack with coke here. However in my opinion you should drink it straight.

Ray is correct.

Time, time, time. When I was in high school I crashed and burned on Kalifornia Koolers(sp?). It was at least 10 years before I could drink any wine type beverage without feeling queasy.

Brandy and coke is very popular up here in northern MN, too. Tastes like bad coke to me, but people (especially the older folks) seem to enjoy it.

Buy the good stuff, mix in a little water until you can handle it and use less water over time. Mixing with coke and other stuff won't just make it easier to drink, it will destroy the whisky, bourbon, or rum's flavor completely. If you're drinking for the taste of it, it does no good to completely destroy the taste. Water will remove a lot of the flavor, but the character of the libation will remain to a small degree.

The good thing about mixing the good stuff is it lasts a little longer. :D

Just my opinion and how I was able to get used to some heavier single malts.

I'm a big fan of Havana Club 7 y.o. I'd recommend it, but I suspect you may have a hard time getting your hands on some.

edit: poor text placement.. my reply doesn't belong in someone else's quote :)
