OG Post-Whorer since 2008 bitches...
Cigar: Opus Maduro X BBMF
Size: 6 ½" x 64
Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro
Binder: Opus X Rosado
Filler: Opus X Blend
So I decided to break my new table in with a cigar that is worthy of the work I put into it, and the Opus X Maduro BBMF fit the bill. The weather was really cool last night, so I decided to sit outside with the lovely Mrs. Souldog for a tasty dinner and fine wine before lighting up this masterpeice.
"That smoke stinks!!"
Start Time: 1951 hours
Initial Impressions: I took the cello off of this masterpiece and was immediately met with the strong and sweet aged tobacco smell with peppery undertones. The cigar itself is beautifully constructed, absent of veins, and the flower cap is flawless. Firm to the touch, the cigar doesn't have any weak spots or wrapper discoloration. I decided to pair this cigar with a pint of Rogue Chocolate Stout, and the evening is beginning to shape up nicely. I clipped the cap and took a prelight draw, to find the taste is akin to an aged Opus, and is familiar to what I would expect from the Opus X line.
I lit the cigar's figurado end, and watched as it burned with anticipation, hoping the hype and patience has all been worth it. Wow, this cigar is extremely spicy! I am surprised at this due to the fact that when I lit up an Opus BBMF Natural. it was smooth and mild. This is an unexpected turn of events.
The cigar is beginning to open up with volumes and volumes of spicy, flavorful smoke. The taste is somewhat sweet, not unlike an Anejo, which isn't a big surprise considering this is the wrapper used by the Fuentes in rolling it. The burn started to get a little screwed up near the crest of the foot, but quickly corrected itself.
The ash is white in color and seems a bit loose, but it is holding up well. The flavor continues to get stronger, and the only way I can describe it is like smoking an Anejo with Opus filler. This guy is really tasty. No wonder people chase them down!
My first ash I dropped purposefully on the table on the Padron Millennium band in the middle of my table, in homage to Brian and his mantra of smoking your cigars rather than storing them up forever and ever.
I'm into the second third of the cigar and it is beginning to open up nicely. The spice has somewhat subsided, and the sweetness of the Anejo wrapper is showing itself in full force. The ash is holding like a champion, and the flavors are overwhelming. I can taste cinnamon and caramel, with a full flavorful punch of an Opus cigar. It's not as harsh as a young Opus, but neither smooth like an aged one. It's perfect.
I took the band off, and am preparing to smoke this baby to the nub! I'm really starting to feel it now, as this big bad motherfucker is sneaking up on me. Time for more Rogue!!
I'm nearing the final stretch, and it's been over two hours. The cigar is starting to get hot, so I am trying to just "sip" it. As I am getting towards the end, the cigar becomes harsher and manifests with significantly more pepper. I'm starting to burn my fingers here, so I've gotta break out the toothpick!
Well, the cigar is finally finished, and I am definitely satisfied. The wait was definitely worth it, and I would recommend anyone to get their hands on one if they can, and if you're storing one up for a rainy day, just smoke it before you're unable to enjoy it.
