So Apple released a thing that does stuff their other stuff already does. Why Ipad and not a notebook or laptop that has more ram, storage, better video and can actually do more things. I just don't get it.

Not sure either but my wife wants one. My littlest one is already jockeying for it if she doesn't use it later on.

I like it. Yeah, the Iphone does nearly all the Ipad does, but the screen size makes a big difference. If you're just looking up something really quick the Iphone is fine, but it's too small to simply browse the internet, IMO. Also, I've seen people on 5 hour flights watching movies on their Iphones. If I did that I'd be seeing double the rest of the day.

I'm planning on getting one for my parents, who are not computer people. I figure the controlled environment of an Apple device will be simpler for them than a full blown laptop (which they have now and rarely use).

Personally, I'd still choose my 10" netbook over an iPad, anyday.

I don't understand it either. I was just talking about this very issue yesterday with a couple friends. My argument was the exact as Ray's, why get an iPad (basically an iTouch with a larger screen), when you could go to Fry's or somewhere like that and get a full blown laptop for roughly the same price?

Yeah the larger screen is cool, but I would rather have a 10" mini laptop and be able to do stuff on it...

ETA - I don't understand it, but Apple is going to sell the $hit out of them.

For those of us that touch type at a reasonable speed, typing on a flat touchpad just sucks. Period. I'm sticking with my wonderfully powerful Lenovo laptop.

Pass.....B.B.S.

Different stokes, man... people that want a computer should get a computer. People that want an internet pad should get an iPad. :D

I see your point, I just don't understand it. I would want the best "bang for my buck", and IMO the iPad just isn't it. I'm sure that in the near future there will be apps for the iPad that will integrate into home automation systems and home alarm systems that are capable of it. When that happens, I could justify getting one, would be cool to have an iTouch that I can use to control my home automation system....

BTW - When you get your, please let me know what you think of it. I would imagine it would be like an iPod Touch with a bigger screen though... :D

That's exactly what it is.

My only hesitation is that this thing requires a computer for updates / upgrades. I can probably manage to update it once a year when I visit, but might be in trouble if it breaks inbetween...

So the big draw is the portability and the battery life. From what I understand this thing weighs 1.5 lbs. and can play 10 hours worth of movies on one charge. Newsweek has pegged it as the most revolutionary item of the next 10 years. It will be a library, music store, blockbuster, internet portal rolled into one without the need to find a WiFi hotspot. And all those purchases are seamlessly linked to your credit card.

The scary part is that Apple will control everything. Since they built the platform they decide what programs and website will be compatible. You will only be able to surf the web on Safari. It won't run flash based videos. That means you'll have to buy an episode from iTunes instead of watching it free on Hulu. Once you buy a song, book, episode, or movie, you will only be able to watch it on Apple products. That means no switching when the shinier and faster model comes out.

If you just asked yourself "what is Flash, Hulu, WiFi, and iTunes?" then go back to your newspaper and pretend this was all a dream :whistling:

(I just bought my first Mac and I love it so far.)

Will it fit in my pocket? No? Not convenient then.

I can definitely understand not providing a Flash plugin. Nobody uses flash anyway.

I don't really get the whole thing, either, but I didn't even have a cell phone 3 years ago and barely use the one I have now.

If I'm out and about, I'm actually doing something, not messing around online or watching TV. If I'm home, I have my laptop and my plasma TV.

I guess I could see some sort of role for an item like this in some medical, contracting, or sales situations (like a high tech clipboard of sorts), but from a general use aspect, it just looks like another shiny bauble to hang from one's tech cred merit badge. It's neat, and I don't begrudge anyone having one, but I fail to see how this product is going to revolutionize life as we know it.

I don't hate Apple (love my ipod), but I don't really understand the intensity of many of the company's supporters. They're just machines, after all.
