Am I crazy, or is it easier to smoke a corn cob vs a briar? I feel like I am able to keep a bowl lit longer and without as much effort in a cob vs my briar pipes.

Thoughts? Anyone else have a similar or opposite experience?

I love a good cob! As far as keeping the bowl lit longer, can't say whether there's a diff between the two, but I do know that my packing the tobacco properly makes one heck of a difference.

But you may be right.....

Cobs seem to me be wonderfully forgiving, not sure if it is real or just in my head, but flavor wise. My Briars just taste better

Cobs rule! I've got high-end factory pipes, estate pipes, artisan pipes, etc. Cobs have a great open airflow, breathe better and dry faster. The only reason to own anything but cobs is aesthetics, IMHO.

I'm starting to feel this exact same way...seeing as I mostly smoke a pipe while I'm puttering around the garage, I don't quite see the need for a fancy briar right now.

When I smoked the pipe frequently, I loved cobs because they didn't get at hot to the touch, they dried quicker, and you didn't have to worry about the mirror polish.h

Corn cobs are awesome everyday beaters!

I smoke my cobs in the summertime exclusively. Humidity doesn’t cause the slurping and gurgling you’d get w a briar with a smaller draw. I can smoke it hot & not worry- any bad habits you have, cobs are more forgiving. Forgiving & less finicky on a humid day.

My ABSOLUTE favorite tobacco in a corn cob is ANY BURLEY- or Carter Hall. You’re welcome. Put some Carter hall in a cob & you’ve found a slice of heaven. Carter Hall is the ONLY tobacco I buy in a big tub. I pretty much smoke that exclusively in the summer. It’s the pipe version of a yard ‘gar.

Briars are different- some have thin chambers- some bigger pipes like a freehand have thick walls w their chamber. Thin walls I’d smoke cooler blends- like the English blends, orientals, Balkans, etc. I wouldn’t smoke Virginia flake in something like a Chacom Mozart. On the other hand- you can smoke whatever you want in a thicker walled pipe. Those are my flake pipes.
