Anyting worth doing is worth overdoing

Very nice selection Alan! I've got one Calabresi and it smokes really well. Very nice Irish Whiskey finish Pete. Smoke 'em in good health!! (Hope the fish are biting!) :D

    Pipes to avoid

Thanks for the reminder about those, Fia! I have heard nothing but good things about them. They are frequently described as pipes that smoke much better than their price would lead one to believe. Hmmm, I feel PAD raising its tempting head again.....

    Pipes to avoid

I should have added, on the Peterson's, you have the choice between the System pipe and non-, and the P-lip vs. fishtail. I like the P-lip on bents, not so much on straight stems. The system pipe produces a drier smoke, but there's the added cleaning involved.... YMMV

    Pipes to avoid

Nothing wrong with any of those brands, and they all make pipes in a range of prices and quality. Iwan Ries has great prices and their sales are usually pretty good deals. Since they're cheap, why not get 2-3 cobs and use those to sample different blends, keeping one for aromatics, one for...

    Building a piper's palate

Hey, Bill, have you jumped ship and become an ex-pat American up there in the land of socialized everything? Or did the Connecticutt Demos finally manage to get you declared 'persona non grata' and ship you off to Nova Scotia? Cape Breton Island, man, sounds like a nice place to live...

    Building a piper's palate

Ah, now I see where you're coming from. OK, the Cornell & Diehl website has their blends broken down into specific categories, that might be more in line with what you're looking for. Of course, these are blends from only one blender, so they wouldn't necessarily be universally applicable. You...

    Noob questions

    1. Everclear or 151 proof rum. Soak the first inch or so of a bristle pipe cleaner and run it thru the stem until it comes out nearly unchanged in color. 2. Same for the shank (the part of the bowl that the stem goes in to). Double the cleaner and repeat as above. However, don't expect to get...

    what makes a good pipe?

Morning Sean, and welcome back to the world of pipes! You ask some big questions with lots of different answers. But I'll give you mine. A $30 pipe CAN smoke as well as a $500 pipe. A $5.00 cob can smoke just fine. At the 500 dollar price point what you are paying for is the makers reputation...

    Hmm...Start Pipe Smoking?

I agree, samplers are a good direction to take when first starting out. Here are a couple of other links to vendors who deal in samplers. Pipes & Cigars Cornell & Diehl Now, the second link is to their own site, but they offer a couple of other lines as well. Plus, they are nice folks to talk...

    Hmm...Start Pipe Smoking?

It's an interesting idea, but a 10g sample is 1/5th of a tin, and the prices shown are about 50% of the tin price charged at many online retailers. Even at my local B&M, it's still about 30% of the price of a full tin. Do some research (www.tobaccoreviews.com), get an idea of what might appeal...

    Dunhill tobacco is no more

The RYO site cancelled my order without explanation and has not answered emails as to their/his reason: I'm guessing he didn't actually have it in stock and couldn't get it. HOWEVER, this site appears to have a good inventory of Dunhill and other bulks.

    What's in your pipe today?

Just finished a bowl of 1792 in a Big Ben prince. And so to bed. ;) Bob

Rambo Ritz hits me at home.

It's not bad enough that I have a sick wife at home, a deadbeat sister-in-law, and a deaf mother-in-law to deal with. OHHHHH NOOOOOO! I have to get home last night after 12 hours at work and clear away the rubble that used to be my front hallway!! The dog's in shock, my SIL is threatening to...

    Hmm...Start Pipe Smoking?

I'm assuming that you tamped it before it was lit? If so, that was way too loose to start with. When the bowl is fully packed, it should just have a slight 'springiness' to it when you press it down. My second, and later tamps (not with a finger this time :0 ) comes when the smoke output starts...

    What's in your pipe today?

Well, I'm really not sure... Fired up a Butz Choquin bent that I set down last week and just came across. I'm pretty sure it's a flake but as to what it it..... Guess it's not the only flake here.

    What's in your pipe today?

Hmm, nothing since the 4th? Well, we'll just have to bump this up! This AM, some Rattray's Black Mallory in a Sav Extra sort of billiard. Actually kind of an egg with a long round shank and a saddle bit. Another 40 year old pipe.

    Hmm...Start Pipe Smoking?

How moist was the tobacco? If you pressed a bunch together did it stay in the clump when you released the pressure? The clump should come apart on its own. Aromatics, by their nature, will be higher in moisture than non-aromatics because of the flavoring and because of the PG added to maintain...

    Picked up this first pipe

I like Connoisseur from Tinder Box. Did the vendor clean/sanitize it before he shipped it? Ream the cake down? If not, you might want to do both to get rid of any 'ghosts' from the former owner. Nice pipe, BTW, Nordings are good quality briar in general.
