    Getting back into Pipes

Did you clean the pipe before you last put it away? That might be the "sour" taste you encountered. "Tongue bite" can be caused by a number of things such as: 1. Virginia blends tend to bite as a matter of course, unless you're a very slow and gentle puffer. 2. Aromatics, because of their higher...

    Black tongue?

Some folks recommend a mouthwash/rinse called "Biotene" and say it helps reduce the waiting time, but some time off is always called for. :)

    A little Meerschaum guidance

Do NOT use a sharp instrument to clean the bowl. Meerschaum generally does not form a cake, and the only cleaning necessary would be some medium to fine grit emery cloth wrapped around your finger and rotated in the bowl. Wiping out the bowl with a tissue or paper towel after each smoke is...

    Anyone in Cambridge MA

Thanks for the clarification. I have many fond memories of Ehrlich's and one of my favorite pipes, a gold banded straight bulldog, is one of theirs. It's now over 40 years old and still smokes great!

    Anyone in Cambridge MA

It's my understanding that Ehrlich's, after many years, recently closed their doors. You might try LJ Peretti, they're very nice on the phone and they might have either this or something similar. Good luck!

    Cigar Nubs

And a meer is perfect for this as they don't absorb the flavoring of what's smoked in them. Another option would be to pick up a cob (cheap) and use it for cigars only. Or, you could send it to me (the pipe, not the cigar butt).

    Recent newbie (to pipes)

I like Butternut Burley from Habana Premium Cigar Shoppe . They have a number of house blends that are well thought of. If you stay away from the heavy Latakia or Perique blends, your wife should be fairly happy. Let's see... Pipeworks and Wilkie http://www.vtpipes.com/ will put...

    CAO Old Ironsides

One of my favorite blends, but definitely not an everyday smoke. At least not for me. I picked up a new tin the other day, and it seems to me they've cut back the percentage of Latakia from the tin I bought last year. Still great, though!

Help for a newb from the other side

One word (ok, two and they're both URL's). www.aspipes.org and www.glpease.com Both have FAQs and articles that will put you right! Welcome to the club!! As to the shipping question, that would vary by vendor but most online stores try to be accomodating. Bob

    New baby to the collection...

Man, you GOTTA start puffing more gently or smoke drier!! ;) I've never gotten anything past a 9mm filter, a 6mm or even the balsa wood triangles in the Savinelli dry-system pipes.

    New baby to the collection...

Really nice pipe! Generally only pipes made by European makers for the European markets take filters. Seems to be more popular in Germany than elsewhere. I have a few that take them, and there's little difference to the smoking experience with or without, except that, for me, the draw is way...

    Gonna try again.....

Sounds like you've already made your decision, but a web dealer I've done business with just posted on ASP that he has put together a "Beginner's Kit". These are estate pipes, but Frenchy don't sell no junk! If you're curious, take a look at Frenchy's Actually, in checking back in with his...

    Flake recommendations

Flakes are a great and enjoyable form of pipe tobacco. There are a ton of different brands, but here are a few I enjoy. What pipe tobacco have you been smoking lately?

Right now it's a bowl of Tavern Tobacco's Laurel Flake. I just barely did the charring light so now (puff, puff)I've just done the first true light. I initially tried this as a rolled flake right out of the tin, and it was just too damp, so I rubbed it out a little and have had it sitting on my...

    Castello Pipe Connection....

Looks like you both got some real beauties!! No Tsuges, Talberts (but I keep looking at his Ligne Bretagne line)or Castellos in my racks yet, but I keep hopin' that a bargain Sea Rock (no 'K's' necessary) will come my way on the 'Bay.

Getting to know pipe smokers on the web...

Wow, it's always the simple questions that result in huge answers. :D I'll try to avoid this. Cigar tobacco is untreated beyond being aged and allowing any natural fermentation to take place. Pipe tobacco can be simply aged, pressed, stoved (heated), cased (flavors added to the tobacco before...

    Balkan Sobranie Pipe Tobacco.....

Nope, nope, nope! I believe you're a lot younger than I am, my friend, as I clearly remember a cylinder printed in black and gold, and the little circles of black tobacco when you popped the lid. I also remember only buying them once, and then going back to Gauloise Bleu for their milder flavor...
