    2009 God of Fire Angelenos

I just got some this fall. But, in my experience, the ultra premiums aren't worth the coin. There are enough xlnt cigars for 1/2 the price, that I only buy $10+ smokes for special occasions. Over the years my collection of OpusX, Anejo, Monsters, etc. has grown just a few sticks each year...

Where and When do you enjoy your cigar?

In decent weather I smoke outside the garage, or on the back deck. In winter I go for a ride, or to a b&m to smoke. Basically, I shut down in winter and stock up for spring/summer. Chemyst

    What's Your Latest Purchase

1/2 box of El Triunfador No. 4 . I mistook these for La Riqueza No. 4s, but these will be a nice change for me. IIRC, I still have one OR "Ghost Stick" left. Chemyst

    Laid Off Smoke Recommendation

Be thankful for the 6 yr. run. It's not the end, and maybe something better will come along. You're not alone. A lot of people are in the same boat. Smoke a good one. Chemyst

How long do you let your sticks rest before firing them up?

I usually let all mail order buys sit for at least a week. If it's a box, I'll smoke one to get an idea of how long to wait for the others. Since I only smoke a few each week, I still have partial boxes that are 3+ yrs. old. Most of them are strong cigars, and many benefit from some age. The...

    Possible Humidor?

Since the drawer is isolated from the others, it might work. Getting a good seal is the big challenge. Lining with spanish cedar is a good idea, though don't breath too much spanish cedar sawdust, as it is noxious, iirc. The 'glue' I used to seal my glasstop humi was GE Silicone ll bathtub...

    Help purchasing a cigar cabinet.

That's a handsome piece. Looks like a lot of wasted space between drawers. If you could move the bottom drawer above the top drawer, then you might get room for some boxes on the bottom. I wouldn't worry about the door seal. If it won't hold rh, it's easy to make a gasket for the door with...

Humidity Fluctuation ~ how to solve

rh varies most during the change of seasons, in the spring and fall. Cold, dry air replacing warm moist air, and vice versa. Since rh was steady for 4-5 months, I doubt you have a big problem. I use 1.25 lbs. of beads in my 28 btl Vinotemp, and need to add water in the winter, but never in the...

Seasoning ? (new drawers in a vino)

I seasoned my ChasDen drawers by wiping them down with a damp towel/rag. It was much quicker than waiting 5-7 days with a shot glass of water in each. If the humidity gets too high, I just open the door to let dry air in, or leave it open a crack, until the rh was right. Chemyst

What was the last cigar that really let you down?

In general cigars over $10 are let downs for me. Sure, they're a little better than most of my regulars, but usually not $5-$10-$15 better. Some of my $5-$8 regulars are better than some $20 cigars, imho. Chemyst

    Golfing Smoke?

Just about anything that isn't too expensive. CAO Brazilia, Punch, RyJ 1875, HdM Excalibur, etc. Very serviceable smokes, but you won't cry if you leave it behind, or if it rolls off your cart, step on it, etc. Chemyst

Use a old cigar box as a humidor ?

You can also use it as a "dry box". Just a thought, since you say it doesn't hold many cigars, anyway. Chemyst

    Hygrometer Calibration FAIL.

The HygroSet has an adjustment wheel on it, but for 1% (1 click) I won't bother. I just keep a mental note of how far off the other hygro is. Right now it reads 8% high, compared to the 75% standard. I may write "reads 8% high" on a small paper and tape it to the hygrometer. Chemyst

    Hygrometer Calibration FAIL.

A slush is too wet. More like moistened grains of salt is right. Add grains of dry salt, until they soak up the excess water of the slurry, but all grains are moist. It should look like wet sand at the beach, with no extra water. I did one of mine yesterday, and the other is in a zip lock...
