If you want rum and not a sugared liqueur, try Mt. Gay. Their black barrel rum is rather good and relatively inexpensive, Appleton 12 year, or any Foursquare/Doorly's rums.
Nice. Haven't had the chance to try it, though I heard this year was much better than last. Our local TW only got 3 bottles in and they were gone in minutes.
Bottles sit on the shelves here for months at $55. I'm sure they assume by increasing the price, bourbon groupies will associate that with premium so they'll buy it. After all, everyone knows bourbon only gets good once it breaks that $100 mark ;)
Indeed. Not much help, but keep an eye on Hi Time Wine. They had it for $59 a couple weeks ago. Everything I see right now online is $70 or greater.
Of course, Blantons is a good substitute if you have access to that.
If you want a true rum, and not a sweetened liqueur, you should look at Appleton, Doorly's or Mount Gay which are readily available here in the U.S. Some of the European independent bottlings by Velier, Silver Seal, and Berry Brothers & Rudd for example, are beyond great.
