:laugh: They only rust (and this goes for any car) if you live near the ocean or are one of those people who insist on living on some snow covered glacier :p

Japanesse cars rust many times faster that just about any other car on the market but you would not know that since you live in AZ.

Marc live in Minnesota and would be far better served with any thing else other than a Japanesse car if body integrity is something he's concerned about.
 
Only lived here a couple years, so no you don't see much of anything rusting around here, just melting. I did live in the San Fran bay area all my life near Frisco and Santa Cruz. Rust doesn't descriminate, it likes all cars there. I was just bashing german cars in jest ;)

Well since you've never lived in extreme climate conditions of the north then you wouldn't know that Japanesse cars rot many times faster than just about anything else then. It's not that rust doesn't discriminate, it's just that the Japanesse generally use lower quality steel.

The Bay Area is hardly "extreme" most of us northerners pay big money for California cars, even ones from the Bay Area. My '86 Jaguar spent it's entire life in Pleasant Hill and was virtually rust free when I bought it.
 
San Jose here, and I don't think I've ever had a car rust on me :D . Okay, only my '58 VW Type I and my 1975 Porsche 914 had rust but both were under the battery trays.

When it came time to purchase a new car two years ago I went with the 2003 VW GTI 1.8T. I fully understand the reliability factor but this car is a hoot to drive! I did all of my homework, price, wants and needs, even insurance estimates and the GTI came out on top for me. So far, I haven't been dissapointed with this car in the least.

Well driving through a couple dealerships yesterday....

Now Im thinking of the new Scion tC's...

Not sure about Scion, other then that the tC is actually the US replacement for the Celica.

Also checked out the G35's, nice looking car!

I can get into a brand new tC for 6k less then a 2003 G35...

what to do, what to do.

Speaking of which, any of you guys wanna buy a 1992 XJ6 Soverign from me?

She's a beauty, got some miles on it (146K) but plenty more to go. Paint and interior are just about perfect.

First $4,000.00 takes it ;)

Extreme? Now that would be you folks and the guys above us. Although I did have the unforuntate experience of spending a winter near the WA/Canadian border (living in snow is not for this guy)
My ref to the bay area was salt water in the oceans. I worked at Foreign Affair (higher end import garage) in San Francisco for 3 years, where there were Japanese, some nice Italians, and of course a Jag was bound to wonder in usually once a week as well as the rest of the german car line-up. Point? Sure, salt water loves to rust cars. Although I didn't keep score, I'll take your word for it rust likes jap cars more than germs. :thumbs:

The early 58's were the last of the oval window. Mine was a late 58 and was the first of the large rear window. Did I mention that I also used to own a '62 an '58 Karmann Ghia? :thumbs:

Sheeet, had a 56 oval 2180cc with plenty of wheelie popping power/ sima pistons, dual 44mm dellorto carbs chromed out the ass/ 15" polished porche alloys, recaro seats, velour headliner, billet this and that. Was gonna have the top chopped and the doors were gonna commit suicide when it was crashed at the paint/body shop. Stay away from Main Street Paint & Auto body in Milpitas on Main St. across from KFC David :laugh:

Other daily drivers were a 67 (first year for the 12 volt), ending with a 66 that my brother crashed.
Never found the notchback I was searchin for :(

Back when I was in high school in the 1970's it seemed those freakin' things were EVERYWHERE. I never liked them or got into working on them and WOW did they ever rust :0 They almost NEVER had any heat because the air ducts would rot out first. Two of my high school buddies had them. One guy had an early 70's bug (not a super beetle) and the other guy had a mid 60's one with a sunroof!!!! (what was the first year of the high back seats?).

Fortunately, they stopped importing them in the mid 1970's and by the time the mid 80's rolled around those things were pretty much history.

In my high school and college days (and before I became a Jaguar snob), my brother and I were the "Datsun Barons" of Chaplin :laugh: . We'd buy 1971, 1972 & 1973 Datsun 1200's (or B110, the ones before the B210) for $50.00 and make one out of three our four. The problem with these was the body rot, they'd be almost completely rotted away in six or seven years around here :( . We must have had ten or 15 of those altogether :laugh: Oh the stories I could tell......they float pretty well :laugh: AND has anyone ever tried to drive like Joey Chitwood (on two wheels?) It's not as hard as you'd think ;) Oh and did you know you CAN fit a Chevy 350 V8 in a Datsun? MAN did that car SCREAM!! :laugh:

A V8 in a Datsun? all we had was some nut in the "hood" who dropped a V8 in his Type I :laugh: .....Weren't the "five and dimes" popular then as well or was the early 80's? Geez ...... the memory is the first thing to go, M-E-M-O-R-Y guys not the other thing! :laugh:

When I was in high school, back in the 1970's, I was the only one driving around in a Ghia :laugh:. Everyone else was driving around in their Dusters, Camero's, Monte Carlo's and Trans Am's while I'm geeking around in my California Look Ghia. One very cool car by the way with its California de-chromed look, Porsche red paint, chrome Vdub wheels, duel-Webbers with a way way too loud header. I recently attended my 25 year high school reunion where more than one person reminisced with me about that old ghia. I even had a couple of old girl friends remind me of dates that we had in that car :whistling:. Your right about the rust in those things, I had completely forgotten about not even having the heater boxes due to rust.

There has been some serious issues ever since they moved their factories from Germany to Brazil / Mexico back in like 2000.

This is coming from a 2003 VW Golf owner. Although mine has been perfectly fine so far. Just a fair warning.

Think Audi TT handling with million dollar looks and A4 Avant utility. Well within your price range. The 2005 Audi A3 2.0T FSI with Direct Shift Gearbox. 200 hp, over 30 mpg. Shifts in 8 milliseconds.

I drove it earlier this week through the twisty roads of the Angeles National Forest. Let me tell you, the way I drove, I would not want to be in the G35. Too much power, no handling (in comparison). Cheap Japanese luxury car.

And if this SoCal Audi Brand Specialist :whistling: can make you a good deal on it, go for it. :thumbs:
