62% of Americans support a ban on smoking in all public places

I know Cigar Smokers that want it banned in Bars and such. I tried to explain that it will eventually hit Cigar Bars and Lounges and their comments are, "Well would you want to work in that?".

Stupid just plan stupid.

Apparently 62% of Americans are commies. (and what's the deal with the "non-diet" soda tax...why not "diet?")

It's a fat tax. Without going political, according to the all seeing govener of NY, fat people cost the state more money. So they should help pay the ballance with the tax on the soda they drink.

My neighboring cities have an outdoor smoking ban. The newest near me is a ban within 25 feet of any standing business. My B&M had to fight the city. It's a free standing building that is further than 25 feet from the next establishment. It was a big mess at one point though. They had just build a back patio. Things are getting messy. At first no one was cited, however I heard police are finally starting to give tickets. One city near me goes as follows... If you are smoking ANYWHERE outdoors, including your backyard, and someone asks you to put it out, by law you must. Yup, good old sunny SOCAL.

It's almost starting to make me ashamed to be an American, we are on our way to total dependence on the gov. A city near me is looking into passing a law that will allow police to go into establishments and test BAC level of employees to insure more accurate IDing of drinkers. Iowa just started the no smoking in public crap. At an outdoor range just after Thanksgiving I talked to a guy who was threatened fines from the DNR for smoking. WTF?!?!

*edit grammar

TOTAL BS.

Can't smoke in your own backyard?

Can't smoke in a smoke shop?

Ridiculous

Stigmatising smokers and taxing the overweight, sounds really enlightened. Government is doing the same kind of thing down here too. I've heard that healthcare prefessionals that say each smoke takes 17 minutes off your life and each rasher of bacon you eat takes 3 minutes off your life. By that reckoning, if I smoke, and eat bacon fast enough, I can go back in time!

Pete

Edit for spelling

Without getting too Political....once you give up one right, you've made a pact with the Devil. Mandatory Seat Belt Laws, Anti-Smoking Laws, etc...they're all the same. The giving up of our rights given to us by the US Constitution....one by one. Goodbye to free will and the right to make up our own minds.

Thank God for the NRA, if they weren't so strong, our right to bear arms would have been long gone years ago...but yet the powers that be continue to chip away at that one too!

We're been down this argument too many times.

I'll be pretty blunt. Tax things higher that aren't good for you. They tax the hell out of cigarettes. America is leading the world in obesity. It's disgusting. 30.6% of Americans over the age of 15 are obese. Not a few extra pounds, obese. Do what you can before everyone is rolling around in motorized scooters cause they have broken ankles.

my two cents.

If one was really concerned with the general health of the public they would start taxing McDonalds, KFC, et al.

Agreed.

It's hard to tax certain things and not the other. Hell, McDonalds offers grilled chicken on a whole wheat bun. They offer salads and yogurt. I personally think us as a country are pretty messed up when it comes to health. Don't get me wrong, I'm a die hard American. I'd serve if asked, I'd make sacrifices to better our future generations. But these places don't make you eat.

As far as cigars and smoking in public. Ehh, it makes sense. But then again, I'm sure I upset people when I pass them in a Mustang with a rich AFR and dumped exhaust.

Smoking on the street, seriously come on. There are more harmful things then second hand smoke. I can understand restaurants and bars.

To each their own.

30.6% over the age of 15 are obese cause no one sends a kid out to play anymore, kids are on pc, xbox, ps3
schools have cut out recess, parks are gone and streets arent as safe.
im fat cause i drank too much beer and stopped doing all the outdoor activities that i use to do.
taking my right to smoke a cigar in a park away cause 20 feet away someone can possibly inhale reminants of my smoke is stupid just like taxing on non-diet soda.

why don't they make an issue with the fact that the additives in diet-soda are said to corrode bone density,

Hypocrisy, hypocrisy, hypocrisy. It's what humans do best. The soda thing is funny, as sugar substitutes are constantly being linked to cancer.

I choose liberty. I'd rather retain my right to do what is or isn't healthy to my own body. Sure, there are things in this life that aren't "healthy" for you. Make smart choices for yourself and kids.

We've heard it all before: everything in moderation.

Banning things and forcing people to do things is downright scary. I don't like where this is heading.

Imagine how people felt during Prohibition. Now that is scary.

No doubt. I can't imagine what that was like. I would have liked to have asked my grandfather and great-uncle about that before they died. I'm sure they had interesting stories.

The funny thing is we haven't seemed to have learned anything from history.

Would love to. However, I have some errands to run with the wife and kids tonight. Probably won't be home until 8pm. Then it's get the kids in bed, etc. Plus I'll be in Boston most of next week so I'm trying to earn up points and "be around" until then.

Is the golden leaf in Uptown the weekly Thursday spot for the Mpls crew? I've heard about it and would love to meet you guys. Thursdays are hit or miss for me. But yes, I'd really like to make it down there sometime.

Thanks again.

Sorry for the brief threadjacking. :whistling:
