Growing too fast.
I was digging through some of my singles boxes and spied this cigar that was gifted me a little while back (many thanks to the gifter), and decided what the hey. This evening was as good a time as any. Just looking at this cigar, one could tell it was an old as the wrapper had a pale, aged look to it with no oils that I could tell. It felt very firm when squeezed and a bit on the light side as far as weight. I punched the cap carefully, afraid it would crack, however the circular blade cut through with no issues. I tested the draw and although a little tight, I felt more than enough air flowed through to smoke good. The cold draw had an old, musty taste to it.
After torching the foot and giving it a few puffs to get the burn going well, the first long draw was slightly mild with very light flavor, but good nonetheless. It took a couple more draws and the smoke gained a very nice mild to medium body. Drawing the smoke in didn’t do a great deal as far as flavor, however when exhaling out slowly through the mouth and nose revealed an exquisite richness of cocoa, toasted nuts, and a distinct woodiness that was quite delicious. There was an equally incredible finish left on the palate that lasted.
The sharp ash that was forming was compact and a medium gray in color. I could see very small tooth throughout. I found the draw to be spot on with the mild to medium body of the smoke, hitting the palate perfectly. Not too heavy, not too light. The smoke did have a very aged tobacco taste to it. I would even go as far as to say that it may be close to being to that point where much more age and it would be losing that umph, however this cigar wasn’t quite there yet. Not quite because the flavor was definitely there and incredibly good.
What an amazing cigar for its age. Perfect draw, sharp burn, delicious and complex flavors throughout. Thoroughly enjoyed it!
