Woman from New Jersey got the idea to send silly string to detect trip wires to her son in Iraq. Now that's what i call American ingenuity. God bless her and her idea, i'm sure it will save some of our guys lives.

This story shows one of the great things about Americans, and that is ingenuity.

Now, here is what I do not understand. Why in the heck, once this idea was discovered, didn't the Pentagon order cases of this stuff and issue it to the persons who need it ? I saw the quote in the article from a military representative stating that a soldier is issued all necessary gear, and we all know this is never true, (though I do not understand why).

As a tax payer, I would gladly like to see an the newspaper editorial expose's uncovering government spending hundreds of thousand of dollars on silly string with an American novelty company (benefiting from a new income stream that would save the live and limbs of American service persons) than reading a mother is having to collect cans and search for a logistic company.

I am going to speculate that the cost/benefit analysis of the can of silly string to the loss of human life and limb makes this a no brainer so the General Accounting Office loses at the gate.

Can some of the experienced CPass members serving or who have served in the military explain to me why this appears to be complete FUBAR ?

Sorry, but how do they detect trip wires?
???
By shooting the silly string ahead of where they are walking, it will land on the trip wire without setting it off.

Yeah pretty much, you gotta remember silly string is super light, although I didn't know trip wires/land mines were an issue in the sandbox? something about a light wind unburying them.

The article I read stated that the silly string was used for detecting trip wires indoors. It was shot across the room and was light enough to land on the wire without tripping it.
