I clicked on a link in Matt R's new car thread that brought me to a web site where I have no idea what I did but it was a disaster. Something completely reconfigured my Internet Explorer with toolbar links to crap like porn sites, etc...

To make matters worse, IE kept freezing up and I had no idea what to do.

So, I grabbed my laptop and fired off an email to DaveWF asking for some suggestions. Well in about five minutes, Dave emails me back and explains to me how he can hook up to my computer through the "remote assistance" feature in WindowsXP (which I had never heard of). Dave spent quite a bit of time deleting unnecessary nonsense on my hard drive and took care of ALL the problems!!!

Everything working great now and I just want to give a big:
THANK YOU
to Dave and remind you that if you're ever in the market for a computer, be sure to check out Dave's company before you go to one of those "big box" stores where you'll wind up paying much more once they talk you into extended warranty service plans that you don't need.

Thanks again Dave

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
Glad to be of assistance.

You have my address to ship that box of BTL's to, right? :p

Dave ;)

Hey Dave, don't you have to have a static IP address to use the remote assistance feature??

I got a PC problem too....

:sneaky: How do I keep my wife off of the dang thing??????

:sign: BUD

fat, u need to talk to Dave, and buy her own computer. :D

hey Dave, I have a computer problem too.....

my mouse keeps finding it's way to these devil.com sites and keeps making bids on cigars....it's totally out of control.

First of all, thanks for all the high praise. It's always nice to get a pat on the back. I've received a few PM's asking how to stop a new breed of pop-ups that are primarilly affecting Windows NT/2000/XP with broadband internet service. They just appear out of nowhere. You don't even have to be viewing a webpage and -BAM- there they are. This new breed of popups are using the Windows Messenger Service (NOT the Windows Messenger Chat Program)

There a very simple fix for it. Download Shoot The Messenger, open the zip file and run the exe file inside.
Click on Disable Messenger. You should now see this:

Once that's done, exit the program. You can even delete it now. The program does not need to stay on your computer to work, it's just changes some internal Windows settings. Of course if you ever wanted to re-enable the Messenger Service, hang on to it.

Good luck to everyone. I hope this helps!

Bat_Chief - you only need a static-IP if you're going to disconnect between sending the request and receiving the assistance. As long as you stay connected, you IP address should not change.

Fatshotbud - Find the picture I posted of my after-hernia-surgery scar and blow it up to be your background. I guarantee your wife won't go anywhere NEAR the computer. Then again, you probably won't either.

Big100HD - I agree with your suggestion as well. I'll tell ya what, if FSB does buy a computer from me, I'll give you a 5% referal fee for all hardware ($40 for a complete basic system with monitor), but I can only do it once - I need to make a litle profit to stay in business. The best way to avoid those evil sites is to find your "hosts" file (In Windows XP it's in the Windows/system32/drivers/etc folder). Add an entry for Devil.com (or whatever site you want) with an IP address of 127.0.0.1 - You'll never be able to access the site again from that computer. Problem solved. Or you could just cut the mouse cord and excise the demons. :p

Good luck to everyone.
Dave ;)
