Hey- I have a couple of questions(well lots but just 2 for now  )

1-how come when I cut my cigars sometimes I get a clean cut and sometimes I get alot of tobacco coming off instead of just a clean cut??? Using a double or single blade-

2- I just got some RP seconds and a Ghurka warrior- It seems as I am smoking them sometimes the wrapper just starts peeling off- Is this normal or am I doing soemthing wrong??

Thanks so much- Gary

When you clip the end of your cigars, how much are you taking off? If you take too much of the "cap" off, you can cause the cigar to unravel, and the bits of the cap can wind up in your mouth. In general, a safe bet is to take off the smallest amount of the cap that you can, and still expose the filler. Of course, on a torpedo, this is not the case. I see many newer cigar smojkers taking off WAY too much of the cigar.

It is also possible that you are smoking dry cigars, and the clipping is damaging the dry leaves OR that you are using a cheap or dull cutter, adn damaging the tobacco that way.

I've had a similar problem with some Baccarats I was aging. When I first got the box, the leaves were perfect. After a few months nude in the humidor, the wrap became very brittle...almost like it shrunk off of the binder. The humidor had proper humidity and temp, so I'm thinking maybe its something to do with the type of wrapper that's used.

I'll add that I get this also. I'm sure its something that we could cure with more time in controlled humidity. I see this frequently in the low end cigars, Consuegras, Flor del Todo, and a few others in the buck a stick lines. I've come to accept poor to marginal construction in these sticks. If you're going to keep smoking the cheapies, give them as much time exposed to 65% as you can.

I have had the same fraying problem with RP seconds (vintage 1992 petite coronas). I know my cigars were not dry at all, I think others have had the same problem with the RP Vintage line. A new sharper cutter may help.

If you think you might be cutting off too much, here's a trick I learned that usually gets the job done. Open your cutter and place it flat on a table. Put your cigar (cap side down) into the cutter's opening so that the bottom is touching the table-top. Then just snap it shut. For most cigars, that will take off an acceptable amount of the cap.

Good suggestion about laying the cutter on the tabe. i almost always use a punch whenever possible, less trauma to the head. I have also noticed that if you have to re-lite the stogie several times it will heat up and split the wrapper, but other than that it sounds like they be a little dry.... :)

In my experience there are really 3 reasons. Both of which everyone has already stated.
1.)Poor construction and lower end cigars.
2.)I am a little tipsy and I wack off more of the cap than I should. This however does not effect the higher quality smokes as much in my opinion.
3.) The cigars are dry. This one is my indicator to start checking my cabinet for proper humidity.

I would take another of the same cigars and leave them in the humi for a while to even out and then try them again. They may act completely different.
Good luck.
