What are your thoughts on this one? This was another bottle I got this week from a friend who picked it up at the PX for $40, I thought she was going to get me the A'bundah, but this is what they had.

I havent seen AVB review this yet

Its not a bad Scotch at all. Not the best either but definitely a good every day pour for a wind down drink. But its been a while since I've had it so I can't give much more than that at the moment. But I am slowly building up a nice bar at home.

Not as good as the 15 but much better then the 10. The 12 yo isn't distributed as much as the others and I haven't seen any around here in quite some time and with other things on my list you won't see me review it anytime soon. I'll be looking for your thoughts on it though in the near future.

Will do my best to review it. This Solera Reserve is great. I figured for $40 on the Aberlour 12 it made sense to pick it up

Okay I just poured myself a glass of this. I think it will take me awhile to get used to.

Right off the bat, some serious sherry taste to it, its a light golden brown color, towards the end of the finish it is a bit spicy, and it has a slight aroma of apples if you ask me. It appears to be improving as the ice melts. Yes I like a cube or two of ice in my scotch, I reccomend it on this one, or else you will be over powered by the sherry.

This is the 12yr Old Double Cask Matured, I dont think you will find it too often in the states as the Aberlour website says its for France.

Sorry this review is soo crappy. I will try to make them better :)

There's nothing wrong with your review. You hit on the basic characteristics and gave us a nuance to look for. As you continue working on the bottle you will undoubtedly detect more/other flavors, so come back and throw them in if you wish. I know that for me, what I get out of a whisky as far as flavors and aromas varies constantly, both during one drink and certainly from one night to the next. When I make my personal tasting notes, I always try to look seriously at a whisky on three different occasions.

I had not seen this around here before (we usually have the 10 and A'budadh, but not the 12), but my local supermarket has a few bottles in so I picked one up for $40.00. I'll update with a better review after a few more drams (only had one so far - two if you count the one the dog knocked into my lap after the first couple sips), but for now I have to say that this is a damn fine $40 scotch, and I'm certain I will never drink the 10 y.o. again. My initial impression is that this is similar to the Balvenie Doublewood (which makes sense), but the Aberlour is more aggressive, less balanced, and I think it's more sherried, but I don't have any of the Balvenie on the shelf for reference. Maybe I should buy another Doublewood and do a side-by-side... Anyway, if you like heavily sherried malts, the Aberlour 12 would make a good, cheap quaffing whisky.

Adding some very brief tasting notes. On the nose, it is obvious that this is a highly sherried malt. The first whiffs are of sherry, then generic fruitiness, and then typical Speyside aromas (flower, honey, malt, oak, hints of peat). The flavor follows the aroma, but is not as smooth. There is a good bit more woodiness in the flavor than in the nose as well, but the sweet sherried character is still strong with a good fruitiness coming through. I get hints of apple now and then. This is an assertive whisky, not as smooth as the Balvenie Doublewood. The finish is somewhat dry, with the woody and winey flavors dominating, and even comes out bitter once in a while.

I'll stick to my summation - a good, cheaper quaffing whisky for the sherried scotch fan, but no substitute for Balvenie Doublewood (one of my favorite bang-for-the-buck whiskies) or other higher-end whiskies.

I just tried this about 2 weeks ago at a coworkers house on a Friday afternoon. I loved it. I thought it was incredibly with really distinct chocolate and orange flavors. A little different than the peaty stuff I've stuck with (Laphroig and Glenfiddich). It's $60 a bottle here in Lynchburg VA, I might have to order it from that site.

EDIT: Scratch that, I think it was Arbelour A'bundah that I had. I have to ask my buddy. I moved in between the time I tried it so I don't know what the hell I'm talking about.
