Absurd Phrases!

I knew a guy that would respond with "Put it this way . . . " whenever you asked him a question. No matter what you asked him his response ALWAYS began with "Put it this way . . ." ???

"To make a long story short" (its inevitably too late)
"Let me run this by you"

A good source for crazy-ass phrases the English language utilizes on a daily basis without thinking is a good foreign-language dictionary. My Spanish/English dictionary has a whole section dedicated to idiomatic expressions.

My biggest peeve is the phrase "at the end of the day" being used for EVERYTHING lately.

I couldn't agree more...my sales director uses that to try to barade me into more aggressive sales style..."So...at the end of the day...what is it that you would like to have achieved with these clients?" Never wanted to shoot anybody until now... ;)

One pet peeve of mine is when someone says "I could care less", when what they really mean, "I couldn't care less".

actually, i think its the opposite. saying "i could careless" about this topic means i dont care about it and as time goes by i will be even less intrested. saying "i couldnt care less" means at some point in time i might actually start caring, which is not the case.

"I could care less" means you do care at least a little. To me, most people who misuse this phrase are intending to express that they dont care at all, so the correct phrase is "I couldn't care less".

You need to wrap your brain around this.

Greetings! Here are other absurd phrases: "To make a long story short." "That puts the icing on the cake." "That takes the cake." These phrases are also often over-used by certain people. Regards, knightlaird
