Age of Earliest Possible Memory

I got into a short debate yesterday about the age of earliest possible memory. One idea that seems to be generally accepted is that this age is between 3 and 4 years old. I believe this to be absurd. I know there is other evidence to indicate it could be as young as 18 months. I have several vivid memories from when I was two years old in my first house, that we moved out of shortly after I turned three. I've told my mother many things over the years and she just looks at me and says "How can you possibly remember that? You were two!!" I guess this debate got me a little incensed because this person insisted that it was impossible..... I guess because they can't remember anything that far back. They said that I must have invented these memories from listening to conversations and looking at pictures after the fact. Ridiculous! What do you guys think and what is the earliest memory you can recall? And if you're in the school of thought that says 3-4 yrs. is the magic number..... save it! :sign: :p

Based on certain events that my family can date, I know that I have a memories from before 2 years old.

For instance, my parents were divorced when I was two. I have several memories of my father in the apartment. He never stepped foot in the apt. after the divorce. As I type, a few more pop in. They are always the same, and thinking of one can normally trigger the others.

I think around 2 is about right. We lived in Allentown PA at that time in my life, and Jersey Shore for a bit, as well, and I have several very vivid memories. Including the feeling of touching the outside of a deep-fryer.

I have several memories of somewhere around the age of 2. My brother was born when I was 2 and a half and I distinctly and vividly recall many events that occurred prior to his birth. Quite strange that I can remember them so clearly and yet dont remember his birth. This almost leads me to believe that my memories may be of dreams rather than reality.

My friend swears he can remember stuff from when he was 6 months old, I find that hard to believe since I can't remember last week already.

Oh I definitely have some very early memories, one of which was emblazoned in my head literally. :D I had just learned to walk and still in diapers, not sure of my exact age but around the two year mark. It was very late in the evening and a lot of family was over and everyone in the kitchen washing dishes after eating supper. My cousin, in his early teens at the time, went out the back door to feed the dogs leftovers and didn't close the door all the way. Well me and my little self pulled the door open and stepped out on the back steps, which were brick and very high with no rails. It was pitch black dark, and I can still recall vividly taking a step and going right over the side landing directly on my head. Just happened to be a brick lying there to catch my fall. Things are a little fuzzy after that, but I do remember sitting on the counter at the sink and blood everywhere, and screaming of course. I don't remember the ride, but do remember being on a doctor's table and the stitches going in. Yes, that memory is in my head....forever.

I also have other many other memories from very early on and not a one fabricated. Doggone it. :D

I could probably come up with some earlier memories but I definitely recall President Nixon resigning from office. I would have been three at the time.

I remember a few things from when I was one or two, much more from three on. My son is turning three soon and it is really weird to me to think he might not remember everything that has happened so far when it has been such an awesome experience for me.

I remember light at the end of the tunnel, whatever that means. ;)

Hell I can remember back to the god damned Spanish-American war. This is no shit, there I was, on the deck of the Maine, condoms in hand, when...

Doc.

Im 25 and I have a terrible memory. Most of my childhood is such a blur because we moved around about every 2 years. There are snapshots in my mind and little clips here and there of occourances, but most I could not tell you at what age they were from. It got much better when we stopped moving and I was finally able to settle down. Im not sure if its just because its more fresh in my memory, or if my mind was in one place long enough to be able to hold on to memories.

The earliest memory I have is a mental picture of my room and our old house when we lived in New Mexico. Id have been about 2.

I remember being put in an Oxygen Tent when I was a kid. My parents never discussed this with me ever nor did other family members. It turns out when I was born, I was put in one after Delivery. Yep, you read that right. I confirmed it with my parents when I was an adult as I generally don't remember much as a child. Except for that one memory and a couple of others that deals with going to the hospital when I was just a boy. I probably spent a good 3+ years in a hospital between the day I was born till I was around 10 to 12 years old. In reality, I should have died but the man can't keep me down. Between having extreme fevers from 90 degrees to 105+..the multiple ice baths and hot baths to raise and lower the temperature to having over 100 stitches in my poor skull, cancer and the multiple trips to the OR table which I think is 9 or 10 times now. Still alive for some reason and now you know why I am crazy. hahahahahaha!!!! One to many trauma blows to the skull. If you look at some of the photo's I've posted, you can see the scar where they went in and removed the golf ball sized tumor from the skull.

I remember some early childhood things but can't remember how old I was really. Since this started as a debate I wanted to see what the scientific community had concluded. I went to NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) and found some studies. The reported ages are somewhere between 2-8. One study suggested that a lot depends on the memory and how it is triggered. Yes I am a nerd. I know.

Explains a lot. :whistling:

I have one vivid memory of what must have been around a year old (or less) sitting in a playpen outside on a hot summer day screaming at full volume because I wanted OUT! That would have been 1950. Then there's nothing until about age 2 and a half or 3.

Funny I can remember that far back and yet I can't recall what I had for lunch today.
