So I have gotten into trading/buying/selling computer hardware on some other boards. The reputation of traders in the computer forum arena is based almost exclusively on a system called heatware.

"HeatWare" ( www.heatware.com ) is a private traders' evaluation and reference site used by members of various BBSs (Bulletin Boards' Traders Forums) which allows one to post evaluations of his or her private trades or deals with another. In order to submit or receive an evaluation, you must register for an account on HeatWare.

While most of the deals recorded on heatware are for some kind of electronic equipment, it's for users of all Bulletin Boards where trading takes place. I think this would be a great tool for us to use at CP. Instead of listing "traded with so and so box split with so and so" etc in your profile, you just put your heatware name in your signature. Done and done.

Also note if we can get the other cigar boards to buy into it, we will curb situations like we had with Eleuthart where he went on to scam another board, since he would surely have some negative feedback in his heatware account from his activities here. Likewise, we would be protected from a scammer who had scammed on another board before targeting ours.

Sounds like a great idea but I think getting people to use it will be the challange. Y'know the one about the horse and water. ;)

Great idea, although its real value would be as an inter-board reference. One problem that I see alot is folks who are new to a board who are not trusted, regardless of how many trader comments they have over yonder on another board. If there were one clearinghouse for comments and ratings then everyone could trade with relative confidence regardless of how new someone was.

Downside is that you would get more folks jumping into deal with people that they had no prior communication with, which could well drive up the number of negative trader comments due to issues of poor communication.

I see no need for it at all. New guys are always willing to send their end of a trade first to build their reputation therefore an established member is never at risk.

As far as passes go, participants are required to list their P/T's so how would "HeatWave" help here?

And I highly doubt it would do anything to stop the Eleuthardt's of the world. Morons on places like stogiechat would say "Hey DUDE, give him a chance, so what if he had a 'dispute' on another board?" The only way idiots like that learn is the hard way, HeatWave would do nothing in these cases.

"Trader comments" on places like CW are next to useless.

Very true and it works in exactly that way. There is also a group called the "troll hunters" that outs bad traders and several websites dedicated to how to take a guy to court over a dispute.

I was thinking why not leverage that system that clearly works for a very large number of people? But like AVB said....

also, Leebo, hindsight is 20/20! how many knew that Phil, Shuji, etc were bad BEFORE anything bad happened?

Anyway, I think Sam has the best point of all...the biggest danger is the people with good reputations who go bad. I'm sure there have been, and will be, people with 100 legitimate positive Heat references who drop off the face of the Earth holding their end of a fairly expensive transaction.

Well anyway, I use it, Heat is Lumberg, and I don't really do any transactions on here with anyone any more, but if and when I do, I'll be happy to exchange heat with the participants.
