Wurm's Anniversary post reminded me of this post I was going to make.

One of the items on the list for my upcoming trip to Cuba is a box of something "Special" to smoke 1 a year of for the next 25 years, starting nect year on our 29th.

So, if you could / were going to do this, what would it be?? (Current production suggestions please, I think something in the Dunhill line from late '80s may be out of line!!!)

As a side note to this, I've been spending hours making a short list of stuff to buy and it's damned hard when you can only bring back 100!!!!

Essentially what you are asking is...what is your best ISOM?

I like them all, different day, different desire - buy 25 boxes, smoke one from each, leave the 24 in each box to your kids

And now my opinion that doesn't involve breaking the bank... :sign:

YOU need to decide what your favorite Cuban cigar is, and then buy a box of those! Just remember not all cigars (Cubans included) age well.

Although I am a big fan of Bolivar, my suggestion is to go for a varnished cabinet of Cohiba Lanceros. Although they take a few years to mature, they seem to keep on going and becoming more refined without losing much of anything. The sweetness of these smokes is enough to celebrate the sweetness of your loved one. Good Luck!!

Cheers,
antaean

I'd buy a box of the EL of the year in question and go from there. Or a box of the AVO EL or AF Anejo if you want an N/C to add to the mix.

100 boxes or 100 cigars? :D

Get a cab, you'll live longer than 25 more years! :sign:

I think the Maduro Cohibas will be great in the years to come.

In a way, yeah, but also looking for opinions on what ages best.

Excuse my Noobishness but I was of the opinion that almost all Cubans age well, just some better than others.

Bolivars actually are on my list 3 times, Lonsdales, Coronas Gigantes and the Immensas, and yes, the Cohiba lancero are close to the top of my list.

I'm going to see what's available in ELs this year. I remember from previous trips they're not quite readily available in some places.

Smartass!!!

Actually, the Bride is impressed I'm planning keeping her for at least another 25 years. Don't want to push it and make her think she's indespensible!!!!

I think the Maduro Cohibas will be great in the years to come.

I spoke to a guy who was there already and said he didn't see one single Maduro in a shop. Figures they've mostly all been exported or held in the larger shops in places like Havana or Varadero.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

You see, here's why I'm asking. Normally, if I try a new smoke, I'll try a 5er first and don't buy boxes until I've had those 5 at least. I don't like to judge anything by just one or two smokes, and since I'm only there for a week, there's only so many I can smoke in a week. I'm going to keep researching places like CP, top25cigar (said with tongue in cheek) etc to try to sort out my short list. Way I see it, if I can get 5 out of the top 10 on the list, get 3 ea of those to smoke during the week, and then make my purchases of those 5 I smoked, life will be good. There are certain items that are a given, like RASS and Trinidad Reyes. As for the rest of the 100 CIGARS, we'll have to see.

Do what I did, a box of Padron 64's. Though, I got it this past summer, 12 months from W-Day so it will only carry me till Anny #23. Damn, I got to start planning for the next box. If i get it soon enough, it will have some nice age to it!

I was in no way calling you a noob Newfie, let me put it this way, if you take a cigar that is already super mild (most of the RyJ cigars for example) and let it age 25 years... what flavor is going to be left?

I was just suggesting you pick up something on the strong/flavor-full side.

Not taken that way at all Shawn, no worries, those were my words only. Although I've smoked many ISOMs, I still consider myself a Noob to them as I'm just learning to appreciate the nuances of those smokes.

I don't think there's even any RyJ on my short list for that reason, they're too mild (for the most part). I'm looking more at H. Upmann (I believe they're one of (if not THE) strongest ISOM rolled), Partagas, Bolivar, Ramon Allones, etc. Normally, I don't buy Cohiba while there as I believe that even in Cuba they're over-priced, but who am I to say they're not worth it. I like antaean's idea about the Cohiba Lanceros, especially since I've just "found" that size.

So many choices, so little time!!!!

I just got back inside from torching a good cigar... and while I was out there I was thinking that the cohiba lanceros was a great idea...

this is a really cool idea. I like this alot!

My 22 year anniv is in nov too! I think i am going to do this also. Keeping a box of cigars and smoking one a year is a great thing to do. I will look forward to one each year and hoping to be alive to finish that box.

NOW - what should it be? I will watch your thread for idea.

thanks for the idea Newf
