Firefox and AVG are hard to beat....and the price is right.
On my work and home machines, however, I use McAfee for the AntiVirus package. Some of the best and most frequent updates in the industry; been at it as long as anyone in the business. Also the system impact due to the resident software is little to none...and I'm the kind of guy that checks. I think the advantages over all between McAfee and AVG are subtile, but my $00.02 is that they are worth it.
Edit - just checked out McAfee's page. They sell a 3-seat license of their home Internet Security Suite software for $99.00....I think it's a pretty good deal:
