I have an enormous maple tree in my yard/driveway and the roots are starting to come up through the ground. It appears that once they see daylight, they quickly become more prominent and they are becoming a problem.

Is there any way to kill them, grind them, paint them, etc. without killing the tree, to stop them from becoming a bigger problem?

I'm not an arborist, just a hobbyist who shares the same issue. I have a huge Ficus tree in my backyard, 60+ feet tall (yeah, only in Calif), along with a huge canary palm, and lots of queen palms. The Ficus has huge roots above ground, and I'm considering chopping them off even more, as they are lifting my patio, however my research indicates it can harm the trees. I did take an axe to some of the large roots and the tree didn't even flinch. It's becoming quite the battle.

Best to grind them down and/or cover with soil. IMO, if the roots start threatening the home, pull it out. I had to have 10 full size queens removed recently from around the pool as the roots became so invasive, they were starting to cause damage. Cheaper to remove a tree than fix a pool/foundation.

Maples have invasive shallow roots, like a Ficus. We have them all around here and they lift cement.

Thanks rod, I think I will start grinding the bigger ones and see what happens.

I am somewhat curious why you had 10 Queens around your pool?

I heard a while back that if you paint a damaged tree with a certain product, it will prevent it from dying. I'm wondering if I grind the roots below ground level, and then paint them, if it would work?
