I purchased some sodium thiosulfate, and unlike my previous supply, it came in crystal form as opposed to powder. Does anyone know how many Tbsp of crystals = 1 Tbsp of powder? Or, is there an easy and safe way to powderize the crystals?

It's really never good to measure by volume. A given volume of powder consists of course of the chemical plus airspace. The ratio of solid to air is governed by the particle size, shape, size distribution, and how settled the powder is. This makes converting volumes between different particle sizes or even consistently measuring the same powder quite unreliable.

If the chemical doesn't need to be measured accurately, just estimate. If the application requires any real accuracy, though, buy a balance that is appropriately precise.

I agree with what Bryan says. I use Sodium Thiosulfate in all three forms and when you use the powder or the crystal, you need to go by weight unless the purity differs between the two. If the purity differs from the powder to the crystals then use a quick calculation to determine the amount you use at 100%. In your case where it doesn't seem to be a need for precise measurement, then like Bryan says, just estimate your volume. If you need accuracy, you'll need a small analytical balance that can interchange between mg's and grams.

Another thing that you have to consider is whether or not you have dry sodium thiosulfate or the pentahydrate. Hydration will increase the molar mass, giving you less pure sodium thiosulfate per gram.

Your a bunch of freaks!! The only chemistry I ever dealt with was converting pseudoephedrine, red phosphorous.......well you get the picture thank God that life is behind me! You guys are too smart for me.

The anyhdrous Sodium thiosulfate mm is ~158 compared to the Pentahydrate being ~248 and the assay being close to or at 100%. So, if you want to use the Pentahydrate (crystal form) at the same volume as the Anhydrous, you could always take some Pentahydrate, put it in a petri dish, put it in a 100c oven for two hours, take it out, put it in a dessicator to stabilize, then use it like the powder.

Top me now Professor Jones!

I'm guessing photography - fixing agent. :D

Or does it enhance cigar flavor?

I remember using it in the darkroom as the final bath in developing B&W film & prints. (As I recall, it changed the photo sensitive silver compounds to something that was no longer photosensitive.)

But what are you guys using it for?? Are you really still printing your own B&W prints or developing B&W film?

I'm using it as a dechlorinating agent. I can overdose the pond by as much as 300%, but I also use Potasium permagnanate as a wide spectrum paracite killer and Desolved Organic solids remover. The two chemicals are counter agents, so having too much STS in the water just thrashes my first dose of KMnO4.

I found a calculator online to create a stock solution, so I now have a bottle of dechlor with dosing instructions I created myself. I hope the fish appreciate this $hit.

What the he77 did I get you invloved this time? I knew you were getting involved but this borders on obsession. First I reintroduce you to cigars and you go ALL in, then the pond deal and you dig Lake Tahoe and become a Chemist! Slow down Mang! ???
The pond looks very good! Well done. I'll have to send you updated pics of mine and the koi, they're huge!
