Gentlemen,

I was in a discussion this evening with my wife, and was curious how a Man of God might respond. While by Man of God, I mean an Ordained Minister, I'm sure there are others here that have their opinions. I am open to you trying to sway my opinion.

As a child, I was taught to only pray for what was needed. For example, a sick loved one, or perhaps a safe journey for a friend, but quite often, the President of my company asks us to pray for our company to pull through rough times. Today at work this came up and we were discussing that with all the problems in the world, that our company is pretty small potatoes to the Big Man upstairs.

As I type this, I don't recall if this violates any board policies as it pertains to a discussion of religion.

So here is my question for a Minister/Preacher, Is it the opinion of the church that anything is open to prayer? Is there such a thing as wasting prayer? Is it all up to the individual?

As I said, I was unsure if this is against board rules, and will gladly recant my question, or we could simply move it to p.m.

My opinion for those wishing to sway mine, is that everything happens for a reason, for me to ask the Big G, to help my company so that I can continue to have a nice lifestyle is selfish, and the President of my company certainly shouldn't be asking us to join him in prayer.

Might send a PM to Preembargo or Lima Whiskey! :)

I don't know that posing the question violates board rules but an open discussion of religious views certainly does. I'd be happy to discuss this with you via pm and invite other Ministers and Chaplains to join us. Any members who are Licensed or Ordained in the ministry and would like to join the discussion, please pm me.

edit to add: PM sent and cc'd to Lima Whiskey.

Though I am not ordained or anything like that, I am a Bible believer and have gone to Bible collge...not that I count credentials like that very weighty...but if you want, you can PM me.

This has been a very controversial subject recently with the whole "Secret" thing. Personally, though not a believer in all things "God", I believe the power of thought is very influential in a person's life. Just being positive in life can do wonders not only for yourself, but those around you. I don't think it's selfish to want to be successful in whatever you do as long as you have a positive effect on others around you at the same time. Now, if my boss asked me to "pray" for something on a regular basis, I'd personally feel like he crossed a line.

Not sure what the “Secret” thing is, but a long time ago I made a commitment to Rod and the membership not discuss issues of a religious nature in an open forum.

I know it is in the rules but why can't we openly discuss this? I am interested in the topic and would like to see answers as well. I beilieve in praying for everything.

"The Secret" is a movie about the power of thought. If you think about something enough you will get it, law of attraction. I recently watched it and thought it was based more on material things, not your physical, mental well being. Don't know what to think of it yet, seems corny to me :)

Unfortunately this is one of those topics were civility is necessary by all party’s and people can get very worked up very quickly.

That said I’m only wandering if he meant to literally sit down and pray or if he simply meant it in the context of that meaning hope. For example “sir our profits are really low” “well lest just pray we can make it a few more months”. But if he’s asking one to sit down cross your hands and pray that seems unprofessional to be honest. I’ll respect people’s personal beliefs but that’s just not a proper thing to do in the workplace especially from someone in his position.

I know of a book that may be a great comfort and help to you... It's called "The Prayer of Jabez." You can find it at just about any book store. It's pocket-size and an easy read. It's meant to be spread out over several sessions (to devote thought to), but you can make it through in one good sitting.

I've been a person of faith my whole life; but this little book shed light on prayer in a whole new way for me. I highly recommend it.

nowhere in the bible are there "levels" of prayer. to say some prayers arent as important as other is heritic. i would be grateful that you work for a guy who actually isnt afraid of voicing his deitistic relationship with his employers, but thats just me. but here's my question for you; "if everything happens for a reason, like you quoted above" (which i absolutly disagree with), then why pray at all?

i would quote scripture here, but i feel like my slapping on the wrist for what im typing will be painful enough.

and yes, it is against board policies to discuss religion....6.) Absolutely no discussion of 'touchy' subjects. This includes political and religious discussion. This is a cigar forum. We pride ourselves on running the friendliest cigar community online. Discussion of politics and religion does nothing but create tension between members

I sincerely appologize if I raising this question, has offended anyone. Certainly not my intent, and not really looking for heated debate, more as I said, was looking for some clarification from licensed professionals. I on the other hand, didn't want to exclude someone that was interested.

I was unaware that we had such professionals amongst us on the board, and if I was, I would have skipped the open forum and started with a simple private message to said gentlemen. I have always found this board to be a wealth of knowledge, and for that reason, when I had the question, thought of this media avenue to venture toward first.

I am now in contact with a few helpful people via PM, and appreciate everyones oppinion so far, but in the interest of board rules, I ask that no further comment be made in this topic.

I hope that is an acceptable resolution to the thread I started.

Gary
