Any Pipe smokers around? Have been considering buying a pipe or 2 and am looking for some advice, suggestions. Yes, I know this is a cigar bb but ya got to ask somewhere. :D

If you smoke a pipe and don't want to admit it :0 pm me or email.

No, I'm not giving up cigars, just want more nicotine. :sign:

I use the long glass ones with some steel wool stuffed in the end. ;)

I have a big one. :D <long pause> it holds about 1/2 gal. of water. :0

just kidding everone knows thats a bong not a pipe. :D :D :D

I did try a pipe for a short time two weeks off and on. every time I smoked it made me sick. :p  :p

Thanks for sharing folks. The crack I had to give up because of the price, was either that or cigars. That other stuff that comes in buds, FRA mandated drug test here at the RR keeps me off that, wish I had your address earlier MP, I gave away a ton bongs , glass water pipes, so forth when they started testing.

Anyone out there smoking BRIAR pipes, the ones you put tobacco in?

I tried a pipe, mostly to emulate my incredible grandfather. He is a great person, and I thought that smoking a pipe like him might make me wise. :D

I really enjoyed the smoke and the unique flavors, but I found it fairly expensive (a new pipe for each smoke flavor?) and tedious (lighting that bowl is a whip). If I ever get tired of cigars though, I will take up that pipe again. Maybe I will move to Costa Rica so the pipe will be more, ahem, fun. :)

I do, and I enjoy it. I have a Peterson, I forget which one tho, but it was one of the specials they put out yearly. $80. Nice.

McP, I don't subscribe to the 'one pipe for each taste' thing. I just use the one pipe, clean it very well, and take care of it. I've had the same pipe for about 3 years before picking up the new Peterson. Now I have 2 :p I don't think you really have to go that far into it if you just want to sit down with a scotch and smoke a pipe. Pipe cleaners are your best friend, along with the reamer (if your only going to keep one pipe that is). I know that's the 'proper' way, but as with all things, I think what's proper for you is what you make of it, not what a book says is proper.

Now that I've got time, I find myself swithing back to the pipe.

But ya, I enjoy pipe smoking, took a little getting used to, and actually asked questions about pipe smoking myself a few months ago.

I like cavendish blends and I'm a little ashamed to admit that I like the apple spice flavored blends. I had an uncle that used to smoke that, and it always turns me into a 4 year old sitting on his lap while he played the piano.

Ahhh, memories...

But uh, I also have one of those color changing pipes that um, just kind of sits around now collecting dust. Forgone era.

My wife's Grandpa smokes a pipe every day for the past 40 years or so. Maybe longer. I think he is in his late 70'snow. But every time he comes over or we go up there, I sneak out with him for a smoke. He smokes a 50/50 mix of Black Cavendish and Cherry something. It is a nice blend, not to sweet, not too strong. It isn't something I would do on a daily basis, but it is a great change of pace for me.

Hey Wascal,

There are a few guys out here that smoke pipes. I think Shadow is one of them (I think)...

I've tried it a few times. I just need to find some better tobacco I think, because it keeps biting me.

Take your damn hands off me you dirty, stinking pipe smoker

Wascal, if you haven't bought a pipe yet and you don't know wiether you will like it or not, go cheap at first. My local guy sells cheap corncob pipes for beginners to try. Another source would be if a local shop sells estate pipes. Yes these are used pipes, but the shop should have cleaned them up before selling them. Plus side to this is the pipe is already broken in and you can get some nice pipes without shelling out a lot of cash.

As for tobacco, let you tastebuds about cigars help you with this. If you like a mild to medium cigar, go with a cavendish blend. Stay away from anything with a latikia blend until you get use to smoking a pipe. I know a lot of people who tried smoking a latikia blend right off the bat and threw the pipe away because of the bite.

If you have a local shop go in and see if you can try a pipe ful of their blends. My local shop owner encourages this to any new pipe smoker and any new customer. And in the years I've been smoking I've never been turned down at a shop when I've asked to try a pipefull of their house blends.

Do a web search for pipes and you will find many sites for pipe smokers.

If you have any other questions, LMK.

I knew someone would come through, thanks Shadow. ;) I have done the google thing and found a few sites, even one that only sells estate pipes. guess the main question was tobacco. Will give the local tobacco shop a go next time I'm there (58 miles away). Didn't want to jump in and spend a couple hundred on pipes without asking around a bit first. I know that sounds a bit high to non pipe smokers but haven't found anything yet for less than $40.00 a pipe, then ya got pouches, tampers...... :0 My thinking on this was less than a $100.00 to get started, pipe, tobacco so forth, and you have smoke for a couple of months. $100.00 box of cigars last me a week. Mix the cigars and the pipe everything last longer.

If it'sa bitin', your packin wrong :p

I really wish I had long term memory :p., but Shadow suggested a method that hot damn works like a charm.

Care to share that method again Shadow?

Wascal, pack your pipe with tobacco then with your pipe tool, pack the tobacco down in the bowl. If your pipe tool has a thin rod attached, take that and insert it into the middle of the bowl all the to the bottom. Then take your fingers and cover the bowl and put the pipe tool out. That loosens the tobacco to give you a good burn and it should also eliminate any bite problem.

ah, great thread folks, i enjoyed a pipe myself some in college, i'll have to revisit it again since shadow shed some light on the subject,

(hey, shaddows shedding light???, what the hell am i saying?????????? :D )

LMAO @ Nick!

I don't shed light, I absorb it! After all I've been over on the dark side for years. ;) :sign: :sign: :sign:

Made it to the local shop today. They hooked me up with a starter pipe and 3 bags of tobacco to try. I already like the first one, so guess it's a new habit in the making. The cigar gods must have seen me coming to buy a pipe, the shop had just got in a couple boxes of VSG's and Hemi classics. Spent much more than planned but not often I find VSG or Hemi's around here.
