Anybody live in the Poconos?

My wife is finally showing some interest in relocating. There is an opportunity in the Poconos that sounds intriguing, but neither of us knows anything about the area. I've done some searches, but all I can find is the Chamber of Commerce stuff that only tells you how great it is. I know there are different towns around the area, but is there a general feel to the whole region?

We'll likely be looking for a more small town setting than city. We live on 10 acres of woods and wetlands now, I'd like to find something similar with wooded area.

This is just preliminary fact finding, so any info would be helpful.

You won't find the wetlands in the Poconos but you can easily find the 10 acres or so you are looking for. Poconos is a bit to removed for my liking, you could easily find yourself 30 minutes from a Grocery store. It's definatley small town all the way! The kind of place where mothers and fathers tend to be brothers and sisters :whistling:

Actually I suspect that northern Minn is very similar.

I lived near part of the Poconos 18 years ago and still get up that way a few times a year. Small town for the most part, land fairly cheap but you have to travel for anything cultural. Wilkes-Barre, Scranton and East Stroudsberg are the closest cities for the most part but the whole area in general is growing. You really aren't that far from Philly or NYC either (80 miles to either) if you don't mind the traffic.

Great place to live. I don't live to far in NJ. I have a seasonal campground site in Bangor which is close by. The place is building up fast. Not the cheapest land anymore. Lots of people now live in PA and work in NJ or NY. What do you want to know?

We were really just kind of wondering what the area was like in general. We were not familiar at all with that area of the country.

It looks like we might want to explore the opportunity a little more. Thanks for the general info!

While the weather is tempting, I'm a country boy. I grew up on a pretty good sized farm in southern Indiana. I need space. Besides, one of the reasons we are thinking about leaving MN is because of the taxes. I'm not sure moving to CA would give us much relief in that area! :laugh:
