Anyone Been on a Cruise Lately?

Just took a 7 day cruise on NCL in March. The ship I was on did have a full fledged cigar bar. They also allowed smoking in certain portions of the outdoor spaces. They have an odd policy though, other than in the cigar bar, you are not allowed to smoke cigars indoors, even in the indoor spaces that allow cigarette smoking. I was on a Royal Caribbean cruise in January 2010 and I only smoked on deck. I didn't have any need to seek out indoor smoking so I don't know if it was allowed or not.

One suggestion though, check this out: My link. They don't really stock decent booze, and what they do have will cost you a fortune.

That's kind of what I've heard as well regarding the booze. How was the pricing though in reality (for both cigars on board and the booze)? What would a typical $5 or $6 stick run on the ship? How about a domestic lite beer?

Most of the cigars I've seen on cruise ships are of poor quality priced at around $10. I think you'll probably have to spend about $15 for a normally $5-$6 smoke.

I am going on a Carnival cruise next week. I do know they have a cigar bar and I have a balcony, that is about all I need.

I didn't price out any of the cigars, but they had drink deals like $25 for a bucket of 6 bottles of beer. Otherwise it was about $5 for domestic beer. They had one bar that had "specialty beer" like Guinness, Smithwick's, and Harpoon for about $7 a draft (but they were generously sized). They did have Guinness Foreign Extra bottles for $8. They got about $6 for Jim Beam and about $8-$14 for Scotch (ranging from Johnnie Red to Glenlivet) and cheap cognac. They also had some kind of fruity umbrella-type drink of the day that was reasonably priced and kept the girls happy.

It was funny on the way home watching all of the guys smoking their glass top boxed "Cohibas" they picked up in port. The best were the guys who would regale you with stories of how they talked the guy down to only $12 a stick.

I have been on a couple of cruises with NCL. They provide a cigar lounge on the newer ships and this is a great place to meet and talk with other BOTL.You can also smoke in designated areas on one level as well as your balcony.
NCL provides a stop at Samana Dominican Republic on the Southern Caribbean cruise.
Also, if you go on the southern cruise they stop at Barbados and I found a nice little cigar shop where you can watch five ladies rolling cigars. It is the Caribbean Cigar Company, www.royalbarbados.com
Good luck.

I've got to admit that when I read the part about watching five ladies the first thing that popped into my head wasn't cigars.

We've really been looking at an eight day cruise on the Carnival Valor. I've read a few different reports of Carnival changing their smoking policy. It looks like they've restricted smoking to balconies, a few bars, the casino, and certain areas of the open deck. It looks like they've still got cigar bars but I'm not sure if they allow smoking or not. This policy went into effect on June 15, 2011. Has anyone else got any better information or a more definitive answer regarding the cigar bar question?

You might want to try sending Carnival an email directly. The NCL folks were really helpful with our questions.

5th week? He got his white hat. Congratulations.

5th week - wasn't that the week the recruits were introduced to Schlitz? :whistling:

...that at they have their fancy drinks in take home cups so that they can inflate the prices and make you feel like you're leaving with something valuable.

To totally add salt to the wounds, those little buggers also confiscate any alcohol you buy at port when you return to the ship - they hold it until you return at the end of the trip. :(

In my day that was the 7th week, George. Things change, though.

So a buddy of mine called the other day and mentioned that he and his wife were thinking about taking a cruise in February and was wondering if my wife and I would be interested in joining them. We're looking to go to the Caribbean (eastern), and aside from which ports/excursions/etc. one of our bigger concerns is the smoking policy on the ship since my buddy and I would both like to enjoy some cigars while on board the ship. Have any of the fine BOTL's here been a cruise recently and what was you're overall experience like? Which cruise lines should we look at and which should we avoid?

Three Disney cruises, two-three Royal Caribbean, and one Princess. Disney is great if you have kids, Royal Caribbean is the absolute best time of your life you will ever have, Princess sucks royally. The Royal Caribbean Ships that I have been on have had very nice smoke shops (I was around thirteen-fourteen on my last Royal Caribbean, had no interest in tobacco) but the shops were very large and had a large selection from what I remember. Perfectly fine cruise line if you like to smoke, awesome food, lots of stuff to do, 12/10 cruise line, would recommend it to anyone.

Actually, we really enjoyed the Disney cruises most, and probably wouldn't go on RC again. The first Disney was just my wife and I in our early 20's, and we had a blast. There was always something to do. An onboard casino wasn't a priority, so we didn't miss it. I just left the Royal Caribbean cruises feeling like I had gotten taken to the cleaners. We definitely had more fun (with and without kids) on the Disney cruises.

To each their own, I guess...
